Investor Jeremy Grantham of GMO recently published a startlingly depressing outlook for the future of humanity.
Grantham thinks the number of people on Earth has finally and permanently outstripped the planet’s ability to support us.
Grantham believes that the planet can only sustainably support about 1.5 billion humans, versus the 7 billion on Earth right now (heading to 10-12 billion).
Basically, Grantham thinks most of us are going to starve to death.
Why?
In part because we’re churning through a finite supply of something that is critical to our ability to produce food: Phosphorus.
Phosphorus is a critical ingredient of fertilizer, and there is a finite supply of it. The consensus is that we will hit “peak phosphorus” production within a few decades, after which point our phosphorus supply will inexorably decline. As it declines, we will be unable to feed ourselves. And you know the rest.
Of course, ever since Malthus, a steady stream of doomsayers have predicted a ghastly end to the human population explosion–and, so far, they’ve all been wrong.
So why is a man of Grantham’s intelligence adding his voice to this chorus?
And how real is this threat? Are we all going to starve?
Humans have been around for a while. But for most of our existence, our population was small and stable. Then it exploded.
Most of this explosion has come in the past 200 years–just as Malthus predicted. What Malthus did not foresee was the discovery of oil, commercial fertilizer, and other resources, which have (temporarily) supported this population explosion.

I totally agree with you. Earth is NOT ‘overpopulated’ by a long shot! Simply the problems are: waste, over-consumerism, greed & pollution. The only reason they keep pushing this is to justify their crimes & because they think they have a right to govern the whole planet to their personal liking, which is to have it all to themselves + a few slaves. This is a psychological warfare technique to lay guilt onto the public so they are brain-washed into giving up their lands & accepting taxing of the air!! 50 BILLION? Really? I’d love to see some references to the supposed scientific evidence that supports that statement. As I recall, when I was in school not all too long ago we learned that several other noted sociologists and other scientists believe that a population of 10 billion would be extremely difficult to support.
It’s not just food that people need to survive – it’s access to drinking water and other resources. Me thinkest you need to show us where you got your 50 billion figure from, because I respectfully disagree with that number – by a LOT.

I think much of what this article pointed out is correct. But one thing is not. He claims the commodities have been getting cheaper to produce as a result of technology; this is grossly misleading. Technology has allowed us to produce more in a given time frame so the market price of these commodities decreased; supply was kept high and high supply keep the price low. But the cost to acquire keeps going up, not down as the article implies.
We always mine the easiest to acquire deposits first because they are more profitable. But that means that over time the cost to acquire resources increases. Oil for example in 1930 took only 1% of the energy in a barrel of oil to acquire it. Today 11% of the energy in a barrel is spent to acquire that barrel. This cost has been doubling every 20 to 25 years. This cost escalation will continue for not only oil, but for each source of energy and each mined resource because of the low hanging fruit principle.
But the obvious problem is that you can’t spend more energy to acquire a barrel of oil than is in the barrel; as we approach 100% the economy will collapse for want of energy to fuel it. For oil this will be after mid century, but we are feeling the effect now as we don’t have sufficient cheap energy to produce all of what society needs. This puts pressure on what is available to consume, and this is the problem we now have with affording advanced medical care and higher education, not to mention luxuries.
I read one study which indicated that when the cost to acquire a barrel of oil exceeds 11% (where it is now) a society can no longer afford luxuries, retirement benefits, advanced medical care and higher education, and if government try to force these things to be produced through things like Obamacare or student loans, we will create shortages of other things more important like food and shelter. Is a any wonder that paying for higher education and advanced health care are two major problem areas in our society?

I say the best way to stop from billions “starving” to death is for someone of stature with actual ballz to identify these criminal “elite” who are implementing this and hold a public execution for them and their families. Billions of lives saved — and likely the world.
Alot of this is BS. I live in the Midwest and can tell you that a fair portion of farmland here is NOT in production. The Federal government actually pays the farmers NOT to farm their land. It’s called CRP ground (Crop rotation program). Thousands and thousands of acres are being bought, just in my area by the US fish and wildlife and FEMA (aka the federal government) for game reserves and flood ground. IT cant be farmed, built on or in most cases even hunted on. IT’s “their” land not ours. If it is happening in our little county I’m sure its out of hand in other places as well.

How ’bout us fat lazy ass western folk stop eating 2 lbs of friggin meat everyday — guess what? They are tearing down the Amazon to make space for soybean crops to feed cattle that WE eat! IT is OUR fault the Amazon forest is half gone.
How about we learn to put down our GMO corn cheetos and hotdogs and hamburgers, and grow a friggin garden? Hey? Or are we seriously that messed up that we will just starve to death before taking back our own right to freedom and do things for ourselves?

The drought is artificial, from Chem sprays, and from Monsanto & Bill and Melinda Gates foundation which is a huge investor in Monsanto to depopulate earth.
