Carrying bird seeds to attract small game

We posted on our Facebook page:

Tony Sacco posted below: “Any thoughts to throwing some bird suet or the like into a survival bag? Could attract some birds or other small game making the first few days a little easier. Also, it is cheap and light weight.”
Some comments we received:

Comment #1: Just make sure you have it in a couple of ziploc bags or seal-a -meal . . . in case it melts, that way it won’t ruin your other gear!

Comment #2: I’d only do that as long as the seeds I was packing could be ate by me if needed. Store bought Suet is mostly filler also, all you have to do is look on the ground under a feeder to see how much of it is left there instead of consumed by the birds & other wildlife.

Comment #3: If I was going to include foods in my emergency pack they would all have the most nutrients possible while being light & filling. I’d lean toward Peanut Butter, Hemp Seeds, & Soy Nuts. Since I just recently discovered dehydrated refried beans i’d also probably include some of them be cause they are quick & easy to prepare not to mention filling & packed full of protein.

Comment #4: Most of the birds you attract wouldn’t be worth carrying the suet for. Finches and Sparrows don’t have enough meat to be worth shooting. You’re far better off carrying snares and learning how to identify rabbit runs, etc…

Comment #5: Here is a thought about survival. Carry some seed that you could eat, but also use to attract birds as cheap warning devices against the approach of predators or people at your camp. If something or someone approaches, the birds would either sound an alarm or quickly fly off.
