Win Every Gun Control Debate Using These Facts

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Predictably soon after the horrible shooting which occurred at an elementary school in Newtown, CT, there has been no shortage of individuals and organizations calling for more gun control.  As terrible and tragic as the shooting was, educated gun enthusiasts realize that no amount of gun control can prevent events like this from happening.  An outright gun ban, if enacted tomorrow, which forced all guns (every single one) to be turned in and destroyed would not put a stop to mass shootings.  Crime and violence would probably rise, those bent on destruction would be ever more emboldened by the fact that most law abiding citizens would be unarmed.  This is the point where a gun control advocate would ask me to cite my sources, and it as at this point I would head over to Buckeye Firearms to reference their handy Gun Facts download.  Contained within this PDF document you will find:

-92 anti-gun myths organized into 16 topics for quick reference

-Hundreds of concise facts to defeat virtually every anti-gun talking point

-Specific references to source material to make research easy

-Full-color charts and graphs to illustrate key statistics and trends

-Plus, an authoritative summary of court decisions, statements of famous gun grabbers and the facts that prove them wrong, dozens of inspiring of pro-gun quotes, and much more

A few samples from the download which should peak your interest.

Myth: Assault weapons are a serious problem in the U.S.
Fact: In 1994, before the Federal “assault weapons ban,” you were eleven (11) times more likely to be beaten to death than to be killed by an “assault weapon.”

Myth: Guns are not a good deterrent to crime
Fact: Guns prevent an estimated 2.5 million crimes a year or 6,849 every day. Often the gun is never fired and no blood (including the criminal’s) is shed.

Myth: Private ownership of guns is not effective in preventing crime
Fact: Every year, people in the United States use guns to defend themselves against criminals an estimated 2,500,000 times – more than 6,500 people a day, or once every 13 seconds.  Of these instances, 15.6% of the people using firearms defensively stated that they “almost certainly” saved their lives by doing so.

Myth: 30,000 people are killed with guns every year.
Fact: 54% of these deaths are suicides(80% in Canada). Numerous studies have shown that the presence or absence of a firearm does not change the overall (i.e., gun plus non-gun) suicide rate.

Myth: The only purpose for a gun is to kill people
Fact: Guns are used for self-defense 2,500,000 times a year in the United States

So there you have it, check out the website and download the gun facts guide.  Every fact is referenced in the document so you can back up your data, unlike those who call for more gun control but really have no facts to substantiate that their abstract concept of “control” would do anything to actually prevent more crime.  On a final note, while you are there consider a small donation for their efforts (I am not in any way affiliated with their organization).

You get what you deserve America. A frightened cowardly society wishing the infantile Hollywood myths about it were true. Stock up preppers, fear the future from inside your bunkers.
Buy up guns and bullets and arm the teachers and the kids, then everyone can kill the thing they fear, each other. The apotheosis of the American dream.

ooo good come back, was it a cut n paste job? Truth must hurt although it is never mentioned just violence and oppression

Feeling bad? Did someone take away your ‘free’ cell phone and food stamps?

      • jsmithute

I think they took your comments pretty well, for this crowd. Jim

      • Realist

So true. They think guns make them free and are too stupid to see that they are slaves to guns.
They’re paranoid against their own elected government and any other state agencies and are convinced they are out to get them.

One thing that got me onto this sight was the prediction of the end of the world on 21/12 by being hit by a planet which doesn’t exist. Now it’s the 20/12, one day away from collision, and I cannot see the planet, but anything I saw posted by NASA etc denying this planet was met by comments of a big government cover up. Looks like there really wasn’t anything to cover up.

        Guns don’t solve problems.

        • jsmithute

Well their 21/12 planet theory proves they are paranoid, and nuts. Most will end up using their guns on themselves. We can only hope they are not scared of going out alone. Jim :???:

How about these facts. The video game Black Ops – Call of Duty gives one the ability to go anywhere and kill anyone at random. The game gives anyone, no matter how young, the ability to blow anything up, anywhere at random. These games and all others like them should be banned and never exported to anyone – use them for infantry training, perhaps the police but they should be banned for everyone else. This is the problem. That kid that did that horrible act was 20 years old, do you think he owned Black Ops – Call of Duty or any of a host of others just like it? You bet he did, and I guarantee he played it with friends and his brother too. These games should be banned from every store in America and the World, and the games which are currently sitting in someone’s home should be destroyed by concerned parents and given a reward by cities for owners to turn in.

      • Smith

You’re so wrong. COD is not realistic at all which is why the army DOESN’T use it for training. It’s a shooting game because some people enjoy virtual shooting. Just like some people enjoy reading. Some people enjoy watching movies.. get it. all those things contain violence in some form which could encourage some lunatic. MENTAL ISSUES ARE THE ROOT CAUSE MY FRIEND. Take away guns and they’ll kill you with a spoon if that’s what’s available. Wouldn’t it be nice to defend yourself if that happened? It would wouldn’t it. Defend your family perhaps. Sounds nice doesn’t it. There will always be lunatics and people with serious issues that will go crazy if not treated properly. Dont loose the right to protect yourself.

      • DaveB

CoD and all the other video games, are played in many countries outside of the USA, and most of, if not all of, those other countries don’t experience random school shootings and anywhere near the levels of homicide.

When people struggle to comprehend the reasons for such horrible occurrences such as a school shooting, they have the tendency to look for blame wherever they can find it.

Video games don’t create killers in most of the world that uses them, so the problem with the USA must be endemic to the USA. The USA is creating some violent youth that for whatever reason, see mass homicidal destruction as a legitimate solution to their problems.

This is a social problem indicative to the current U.S culture.

      • Anonymous

        Close but no cigar.

You need to have a person on a state that cannot differentiate reality from fantasy. A person can play violent video games without being a danger. But when combined by legal psychotropics (prescribed by a psychiatrist) there is a risk that the person does not differentiate reality from fantasy. For all they know they are playing a game, not shooting someone.

The problem is the drugs, nor the guns, not the video games and psychiatrist are never held accountable. And yet they know the effects of the drugs, thus are as guilty as the one pulling the trigger. (if not more)

    • Wotjo

when you portray acts of violence in every aspect of life you end up with a paranoid nation too scared of each other. Can I ask ‘what are you prepping for ?’. Is it ‘war’ ? . And if so who will you be at ‘war’ with? Is it the Government or your fellow citizens? You obviously feel the need to prepare for some unknown event (real or imagined) and are prepared to defend yourself with an arsenal of weapons that you are stockpiling. What a messed up place America has become. The Land of the free is now the land of the oppressed, the land of the paranoid, the land of Evil.

      • Upaces

Ronald Reagan: We must reject the idea that every time a law is broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions.

      • skawalker35

Well for starters, we just experienced hurricane Sandy. Having some backup provisions and a way to defend yourself isn’t a bad idea. I think it needs to be kept within reason. When a looter comes into your home you don’t know what their full intentions might be. They might take your stuff, or kill you and take your stuff. It’s no secret our country is on the decline. We’re passed the point of no return in our debt. Our system is unsustainable yet nothing changes. You believe that everything “will just be ok”, unwilling to even consider the possibility otherwise. We shouldn’t live in fear and paranoia, of course. I don’t. But, I think spending a small amount of time and resources on preparedness is never a bad idea.

My goal right now is to have enough food and drinking water for 3 days. And maybe some other little things like cleansing wipes, toilet paper, etc. I also have couple guns. I expect to only ever use them for my pure enjoyment on the range. Anyway, these provision are something to get me through a power outage or a natural disaster. Something that would be short lived, at this time.

I agree that America in many ways is messed up. But it’s not messed up because of simple gun ownership, and probably not in the way you say it is. You should read my post further down.

      • Realist

You hit the nail on the head here.
The most overriding theme on this site is the paranoia of the American people against their own elected government. Everyone is out to get them.

      @Blackie the fartful border collie
It appears your just another ignorant liberal presented with overabundant amount of “facts” and your conclusion: ignorance.

    • CM Rocks

These are great facts, but you need to provide links to reliable sources so people can’t say we made this stuff up when we use it in our arguments.

    • Anonymous

You forgot one thing. Liberals don’t debate on facts. They debate on emotion.

They care nothing about facts. They ignore it and push their agenda through emotion. The only thing that I know stops a liberal is a swift kick in the ass!

    • Orly?

This is great, but lets see some stats.

    • Wonkadelica

Once again, no links to credible sources.

The lesson everyone is missing from Newtown is that anyone intent on mass murder only has to kill one legal gun collector to have access to an arsenal to kill dozens. The one thing all mass murders have in common is high capacity magazines.

      • Equalizer

@ WillyWonka, your dead wrong, data is clear and documented.

    • skawalker35

I would like to take this a step further and ask you this question: what causes mental illness? 5 of 6 gun incidents in this country are life or property saving ones. Not life taking ones. In my mall in Portland last week, a concealed carry permit holder confronted the shooter which is likely what stopped the body count at 2, and not possibly many more. The media didn’t report that.

Ask Ted Bundy about what he says fueled his aggression and murders. Just minutes of pornography, I’ve heard, has the same affect on the brain as hours of violent content. Heaven forbid we acknowledge the fact that our culture is on the decline. Even talking about video games and movies doesn’t take it far enough. Let’s keep promoting promiscuity in everything we do and expect to not have serious issues in our culture. By the way, to you anti-gun folks, Japan’s laws only work the way they do because it’s in combination with many other factors. It’s not just simply their implementation of super strict gun laws. Evil carried out is the end result of something that begins small and grows into something big and disgusting. We argue about the tool used to carry out the end result. I agree there’s a problem, and I have ideas about how to minimize it without infringing on gun rights.

Forensic scientists have said that the media needs to stop essentially blowing up these shooting stories that they run 24/7 that turn these shooters into “anti-heroes”. The media fuels the fire. Let me ask you anti-gun people this: do you get your facts from the mainstream media? Do you want to ban cars because people choose to drive drink and kill people? There’s far more deaths from that! Why is smoking not yet banned when 5 times more people die from 2nd hand smoke than from guns? Of those, how many children? 50 times more people die from smoking than from guns. Every time something like this happens it’s in a gun free zone. This seems seems very simple to me. Add more gun free zones, add more killing fields. At the very least a gun free zone should be required to provide official armed security if you’re going to have one.

There are roughly 250,000 legal machine gun owners in the USA. For those of you here that don’t understand guns, a machine is ONLY a machine gun if it can continuously fire rounds by simply holding down the trigger. These are legal in the USA provided you go through the motions. There has been virtually no crimes committed with legally owned machine guns. Secondly, your definition of “assault rifle” is incorrect. An assault rifle must be fully automatic, fired from the shoulder, chambered in an intermediate rifle cartridge, and fed from a detachable box magazine. It has nothing to do with whether or not it’s a military rifle and the magazine capacity doesn’t matter. I could have a bolt action rifle with a magazine. I still have to manually operate the bolt to chamber a round and there’s one trigger pull per shot. You simply want to ban a gun that is black and has additional grips to be controlled better. I don’t know about you, but as a responsible gun owner and operator, I like the idea of having maximum control so rounds go where I want them and not into an innocent person. Or, that a round goes into a bad person with a gun, and no where else.

Some of you are complaining about credible sources not being provided. All you need to do is some research with an unbiased enough position to really learn something. Maybe you should go to a shooting range and see what people are like. Maybe fire a gun yourself. Then, your position might be more credible. I think it’s interesting how we used to have rifle ranges in schools with much less gun restriction and we never saw the kinds of atrocities that we’re seeing today.

For some reason guns have become the toys of choice in America. It’s paradoxical that even “anarchists” and so-called self-sufficient survivalists treat industry made weapons as a necessity. This pathological fear of “socialism” is very telling. There’s good reason why the US economy is headed where it is, and that is people are delusional and are more interested in violence than productive work. Good luck my friends!

I have a grandson who just signed up for the military. He believes he’s going to get to be a sharpshooter because he’s so good on the video games. My heart wrenches for him because he’s a sweet, kind, loving kid who has no comprehension of what killing another person really means. I truly dread what will happen to him in the military, particularly if he is ever sent to kill. No matter how he comes back from such an assignment, dead or alive, I will have lost this sweet and beautiful grandson of mine.

Additionally, it has been shown that ‘experts’ at these games are not as good as they think they are when confronted with a real life situation, even when given additional training. View this video for a controlled study: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QjZY3WiO9s

If we are rendered powerless, what else can we do to confront the tyrants?

      http://www.zerohedge.com/contributed/2012-12-17/gun-control-big-picture

“And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand?… The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin’s thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt! If…if…We didn’t love freedom enough. And even more – we had no awareness of the real situation…. We purely and simply deserved everything that happened afterward.”
      ― Aleksandr I. Solzhenitsyn

“In keeping silent about evil, in burying it so deep within us that no sign of it appears on the surface, we are implanting it, and it will rise up a thousand fold in the future. When we neither punish nor reproach evildoers, we are not simply protecting their trivial old age, we are thereby ripping the foundations of justice from beneath new generations.”

WHY DOES THE MEDIA REFUSE TO REPORT A MASSACRE BEING STOPPED BY AN ARMED CITIZEN TWO DAYS AFTER SANDY HOOK?

While reports of Tuesday’s shooting at the Clackamas Town Center Mall in Oregon, dominated the national media, until Friday’s horrific shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, one very important detail has been repeatedly (and intentionally) left out of the MSM’s coverage.
