In our efforts to head for the hills, you can expect traffic jams and blockades, maybe we need to consider the Bug Out Boat.

I’m not talking about jumping in a boat and heading out to sea when the SHTF; or am I?

I’m talking about avoiding trouble. Bridges are natural choke points. They are the perfect place for government troops to run checkpoints and roadblocks, but even more serious, a great spot for bad guys to ambush families heading out of dodge! Even in the best scenario, that bridge, that you need to cross, might be choked with broken down and abandoned vehicles. You have to be ready.

Most of us have some major rivers or water in our path of escape. Heck, I live on a peninsula, with a mile wide river on one side. There are only 2 or 3 bridges for me to get to the freedom of Virginia, without going through a major city.

I’ve been contemplating this situation since I started prepping. I realized quickly that my best bet is to grab the bug out bags, the kids, the canoe and our life jackets and head to the river. At that point we can either head across (at an angle of course, it’s a canoe), or drift quietly down stream. Drifting down stream takes me away from the metropolitan area and deeper into a safer rural area.

I’ve already coordinated with a friend who lives fairly close to the same river, on the opposite side, about 30 miles away.

This is my plan.

Sooner or later on your bug out, you’ll likely need a bug out boat. Before it gets to that point, take your family out in your bug out boat. They don’t have to know that it’s part of your bug out plan. The family will love some boating time and you’ll get bonus points for being a great family member, while stealthily preparing them for bugging out.

I chose a canoe because I was able to barter for it. You may choose whatever is convenient for you, a canoe, kayak, boat or inflatable raft.

An inflatable boat would be great because you could toss it in the car pretty easily for automotive bug out. You could even have a spare and still take up almost no room. Then if your path is blocked at a water way, you can inflate, or unload your boat and fjord that river.

Avoid those bridges, in your bug out boat. Don’t forget the life jackets and oars, and a map of the region you are traversing.
