Freezing Berries

Hey, I was at Meijer yesterday and they have nice, ripe strawberries for $1.00/quart. Huge deal! 

When you see deals like that and you are a smoothie conisseur, baker, etc. It would make perfect sense to pick up several containers of these, wash them, then lay on a baking sheet in a single layer and freeze. Once frozen, you can remove them from the baking sheet and put them into individual freezer bags or containers. Label them with the date and contents and then whenever you want a smoothie, make a dessert, or a healthy snack, just pop a handful of them out and there you go! 


Fresh, healthy berries at one heck of a deal! You could also use a vacuum sealer and package them that way. This same method could be done with any kind of fresh berry or even veggies.


In addition to freezing the ripe berries as mentioned above, if you were up for the challenge, you could take the $1.00 strawberries and make batches of jam or jelly. There are methods for freezing or canning either one. If the berries are especially ripe when purchasing, you will want to make sure you have the time in a day or two to make the jam/jelly. You won’t want to let these bargain berries sit too long without doing something with them. Also, consider planting some strawberries this summer. They tend to multiply year after year. You could even start your patch by borrowing some “runners” from a friend or neighbor. I have done this and it has proven to be very successful.
