Outdoor Solar Lights during Power Outages

Hurricane Irene cause a power outage in my neighborhood for about 4 days. My wife and kids packed it up and headed over to my In-Laws, but someone had to stay home and keep an eye on things. Why didn’t I think of using my Outdoor Solar Lights during Power Outages?

The first night I made do with flashlight and camping lanterns. The second night, I was gazing longingly outside and noticed my 2 solar carriage lanterns and my 2 IKEA Solvinden, Solar powered, half globes.

I grabbed those 4 solar “lanterns” and brought them indoors. They lasted all night, adding much needed light. I hung one of them in front of a large wall mirror in my front room. This allowed me to advertise that my home was occupied, hopefully discouraging roaming villians. I was also able to light up adjacent rooms so I could move more freely about the house.

In the morning, once the sun was up, I’d just stick them back out in the sun.

I also received this email from someone who had a similar idea:

Last week we lost power for about 5 hours.
We looked Outside, and noticed our solar lights around our patio. We brought several of the solar lights inside.
We stuck the solar light pipes into plastic drink bottles containers and they made the nicest, brightest, lighting you could ever imagine.
We put one in the bathroom, the kitchen, the living room, etc. There was plenty of light. 
The lights we have fit into the small (20oz) water bottles and they also fit into most of the larger liter bottles. If you need a weight in the plastic bottle to keep them from tipping over, you can put a few of the pretty colorful “flat marbles”. The next day, you just take your solar lights back outside to recharge Perfect for power outages.
