Today I have a short review on a product the fine folks at Justice Caps ( http://www.justicecaps.com ) sent us.

Justice caps have developed a product aimed squarely at the the guy trying to stay “off the grid”. What this product does is use 9 LEDs that boast, according the the manufacturer, “anti-cam technology” that “give you the ability to hide in plain site [sic], and no video camera can record your face.” (quotes taken from the instruction manual.)  The cap really looks for all the world like one of those white-light LED caps you can use to work hands-free in the dark, and aside from the faint outline of the battery pack in the sweatband, it looks quite innocuous.

However, I’ll admit, I was pretty skeptical, and really, upon reading about Justice Caps, wondered how I was going to try to promote and review something that really looked like it kind of straddled the line between enabling bank robbers and the tinfoil hat crowd. But, then I took this picture, and it made me do a little digging that helped put things into perspective about the usage of this cap:

This is the very first picture I took after I slid three fresh AAA batteries in the battery pack, donned the cap, and hit the small switch located in the brim. Pretty underwhelming. So I emailed Justice Cap’s customer service center, wondering if I was doing something wrong. Chris wrote me back:

“Hi TRW,

Great picture!

Our Justice Caps only work against “low-light” and “nightvision” video surveillance cameras ( “Protection from Dusk til Dawn” ).

Try using the Justice Cap inside a shopping mall, or after dark in a parking lot – or go into any liquor store and watch yourself on the overhead monitors.”

So, I took his advice, and tried wearing the cap, with its lights on (when on, they emit just a very dull red glow to the human eye.) in a local store that had one of the mentioned monitor cameras, just after sunset. It actually worked pretty well, with a flare kind of suspended in front of my head, especially if I aimed the cap towards the camera. Encouraged, I came home and made this video with a cellphone camera, in front of a computer screen, which I thought might replicate using an ATM at night: (click the link to view)

So, my skepticism was mostly assuaged. As long as one stays in low-light situations and areas, one can definitely lower the chances of cameras being able to recognize your face. However, it DOES make a bright beacon that draws attention in pictures, which might be counterproductive. It is definitely NOT a 24-hour solution to a perceived problem, but it does fit the bill if you’re worried about facial recognition tracking in the evening “dusk till dawn” hours.
