Knife Safety Considerations

A knife can go a long way to ensuring your safety and survival in an emergency situation. It is absolutely critical you know how to properly use a knife. Because of this, we wanted to point out some best practices when it comes to using and carrying a knife.

We are going to make this as simplistic as possible. Basically, there are two main parts to every knife; the pointy part and the sharp edge. These two parts should always be pointed away from your body and that of any other people. Now, it may seem like it is easier to ignore that basic safety rule during certain tasks, but let me tell you, it is absolutely not. If you get a puncture wound or a cut, you are flirting with disaster, especially in a survival situation.

In this video, you will see several different demonstrations on how to use a knife the right way. Along with the right way, you will see a few very common, yet dangerous mistakes people make when using a knife. Once you recognize what you are doing wrong, you will be instructed on how to complete the same task in a manner that is safe for you and anybody who may be standing nearby.

Another key point is the fact you must protect your knife blade at all times. Never leave a life laying on the ground unattended. It should always be placed into the sheath you hopefully have at all times. This protects your knife and most importantly, the people around you.

One of the things we teach is it is imperative to let a group of people know when a knife is out of its sheath. Our term is “Tool in the air.” This lets everybody know a knife is being wielded and caution should be used. You certainly don’t want anybody walking into you or distracting you while you are using your knife. It may sound silly to you, but safety should be your utmost concern.  This is primarily a practice we use when in large groups.
