Water Containment – 4 Strategies

The human body is made up of mostly water, so you can imagine how vital water is to our survival. Modern society has recognized that need and made water available in our homes, workplaces and schools. While this is wonderful, what would you do if that modern convenience was taken away? There is a strong possibility that during a crisis, you will not be able to get water from your tap.

Water Containment – 4 Strategies

It would behoove you to learn how to procure water if there is ever a problem with the public water supply. One of the easiest and most common ways of saving water is by using rain barrels. Typically, a barrel will hold about 50 gallons of water. If you have the money to spend, you can buy a barrel at one of the big box home improvement stores. If you are not willing to fork out a lot of cash, no worries, you can use old barrels to catch rainwater. You will need to do a little improvisation, but you can certainly make it work.

If rain barrels are not an option, there are a few other options you can use to catch rainwater.

Holes

Yes, you can dig a hole, line it with plastic and wait for it to fill up with water. Ideally, you want to position your hole under a gutter to catch the most amount of rain. You will need to choose a heavy plastic material, tarp or even heavy-duty garbage bags to line your hole.

Garden Pond

This is a great, beautiful way to store water for an emergency. Meditation pools are fabulous additions to any backyard and can provide a nice place to relax as well as an emergency water source.

Grab a Hose

No, you are not going to attach it to a faucet. We already know that would be futile. Instead, use a hose to direct the water from a gutter into some kind of container. This could be a pool, buckets, pots and pans or any other vessel you can find.

Storage Buckets

Place buckets and other containers around the perimeter of your yard to catch water. You could make these decorative pieces by having the kids or yourself decorate them.

These are easy solutions to the water problem. There is almost no cost involved. By starting your water containment storage solutions today, you will save yourself a great deal of precious time and energy during a true emergency. As always, all water needs to be purified before consumed. It isn’t the rainwater you need to be concerned with, but the basins in which the water is caught with are likely to have various contaminants.
