GPS Navigation OpSec

Now that we know that the NSA and the FBI have been tapping directly into the servers of nine US service providers, including Facebook, Microsoft, Google, Apple, Yahoo, YouTube, AOL and Skype, it’s time to stop using their services including their navigation services. It’s time for GPS Navigation OpSec.

I am just as guilty as everyone else. I trusted services like Google Navigation, Google Maps, Google Voice, Google Mail (Gmail), Google Search, Google Plus (Google+), Google Talk, Google Messenger other equivalent services from other providers like Yahoo.

I now realize that letting these companies, and now the government, know who I talk to, who I text, who I’m friends with, and where I travel is just too much information to share. The government doesn’t have our best interests in mind, they have their totalitarian goals that directly oppose my freedoms and my liberty. How long before they start rounding up patriots and Constitution loving Americans?

I was a huge fan of Google Navigation. I could search Google maps, plug in an address, click a little star and the address was magically stored on my phone for GPS navigation. I know realize I must go back to the old ways.

It’s time to buy an old school GPS unit. AVOID any of them with real time traffic, traffic alerts or real time maps or auto map updates. You want to avoid any of the GPS units which SEND data back to any provider. It’s ok to use the satellite transmissions but you don’t want any data flowing back.

I’m not sure that these GPS units are 100% safe, but if you buy it with cash and are cautious about updating it at home, it’s going to be much much safer than the real time traffic GPS units.

I am also fairly confident that if you buy a “dumb GPS” from Amazon, that they wouldn’t record the serial number or Host ID of the unit they send you, but you never know. Again it’s better than using the real time traffic GPS or the one embedded in your phone or tablet!

Phrases I look for in the comments on Amazon when buying a GPS:

• It would be better if it had real time traffic
• It doesn’t have real time traffic
• I have to manually update the maps using my computer
• etc.

I currently have the Magellan Roadmate 3120-MU and it meets my OpSec requirements!

Remember the government isn’t your friend any longer. They’ll use whatever data they can get their hands on to spy on good, hard working Americans. It’s time for It’s time for some GPS Navigation OpSec.
