Does Technology Play A Part In Modern Day Survival?

The answer isn’t as black and white as you may think.  Many avid survivalists would say that all that is needed to survive is the necessary skills and a lot of mental toughness.  This outlook definitely has merit, survival skills are definetly helpful in a post-disaster environment, but one could argue that having the right technology can definitely be crucial to survival.

Having more technology can only help you.  Technology would be even more important in a post-disaster rebuilding environment.  Whichever view you hold to, technology plays a major role in modern day survival.

Make Sure That You Are Ready

Whether you and your family are caught up in a manmade or a natural disaster, you will want to have the skills as well as the technology to not only survive, but to prosper after the initial disaster has subsided.  The danger does not end at the end of the initial disaster.  There are many cases throughout history that show a post-disaster environment can be a very dangerous place so you want to make sure that you are ready.  Constantly testing your skills and technology in mock survival scenarios is a good way to make sure that you and your equipment will be ready when the time comes.  Most forms of technology can be helpful, but there are a few things you can count on not working depending on the disaster scenario you find yourself involved in.

Don’t Count On It

Don’t count on phone service of any kind during or after a major disaster.  Following a disaster, even if most infrastructure is intact many times the sheer amount of phone calls being attempted at one time will jam up the system.  That means, try using your phone every once in a while, but immediately following a disaster don’t be surprised if it doesn’t work.  Internet is another daily convenience that you can count on not working following a disaster.  Much like phone networks, broadband technology has a bad track record of not working properly following a disaster.  That doesn’t mean throw your phone and computer out though, they may come in hand if you are stranded for the long haul.

Be Resourceful

Advanced technology such as cell phones and computers may be rendered useless in a disaster, but keeping them on hand to utilize spare parts for other more pressing needs is always a smart idea.  A broken computer may not be of much use to most people, but in the right hands and under the right circumstances a broken computer could hold the key part to complete a two-way radio that is always handy in survival situations.  There are countless things that a computer’s parts could be utilized for in order to make life easier in a post-disaster environment.  Never throw out things that seem useless now because you never know when you might need to utilize them in order to survive.

Live On

Technology is what separates us from animals.  It is true that survival knowledge and skill will help keep you alive during a disaster.  And technology may seem useless during times of disaster, but when it comes to the rebuilding phase that follows most disaster scenarios, technology is priceless.  So don’t fall into the trap that many survivalists do and depend only on their skills because the ones that are going to rebuild after a disaster are the ones that have held their technologies close by.
