Comment #1: Excellent ideas for suburbanites. For remote living and homesteads on a few acres, not so much. Interior door bars, as pictured, are okay, but I’d use something besides white pine boards. Oak or steel bars are my choice. I also believe one piece shutters over every window is a good idea. 3/4″ plywood is what I used. Shutters should latch to the sill with steel bolts and be mounted with steel door hinges to facilitate removal, if you desire. Reinforce your doors, too! Peep holes are great, too. My garage is also my barn. I recommend a single rolling barn door, which can be bolted from the inside. A side door locked with a hefty padlock. Everyone’s needs will differ… Oh, and yes, I learned from wild fires, years ago: no brush or bushes around the cabin – there a drainable line down the center of our roof with 4 oscillating sprinklers… we back up on a National Wilderness Area and fire is always a threat. Our water supply is strong enough to power the sprinklers, which will keep “rain” falling on the structures. This is a great article – enhance the ideas to fit your situation.

Comment #4: Sure, that might work if you don’t plan on surviving in the event of a massive SHTF situation. Where everyone in the entire world is more than willing to break down your door to kill you. Yeah, that door alarm and mailbox idea will come in VERY handy!!

Comment #5: I’m a 20 year finish carpenter, and I must say 3&1/2″ screws countersunk holes, 4 down each side (star heads) is much better than any brace. The screw holes may be pre drilled, floor bolts, (sliding) and top on each corner is as secure as it gets.

Comment #6: I have rental property. IMO, the one with only a single mount point are weak. You should get the ones with two point points, one on top and one on the bottom and the 2×4 would slide in from the side rather than over the top.
