Cleaning Cookware while Hiking/Backpacking

Gerald Estrada asks: “Hi. Question. Whats the best way to clean cookware on a hike/backpacking trip?”

Comment #1: Sand works really good if there is not much water..

Comment #2: In back country, use dehydrated food, cook it in the bag, only use pot to boil water.

Comment #3: Don’t take anything you have to clean… That would be the easiest

Comment #4: I always bring tin foil for a lid, so when I’m done, I crumple that up and use it as a scrubber

Comment #5: Ash from the fire and sand from a creek. That way you don’t have to carry anything. If your worried about disinfecting just boil some water in the cookware the heat will kill everything and you’ll have potable water at the same time.

Comment #6: I can tell you what not to do. Do not use any type of soap unless you have hot water to rinse with. The soap will leave a residue that will put a horrible taste in everything you make with the pots and pans, especially coffee.

Comment #7: Careful not to use sand on teflon or aluminum pots/pans. Id rather cook in a dirt pan than ingest toxic substanced. When using stainless you can use sand.or.bring steel wool.

Comment #8:  You can bring parchment paper liners for your pots… You can also put half an inch or so of water between the pot and the liner, to keep from scorching any of the contents of the pot… Works like a dream!

Comment #9: I always have some castle soap on hand, backing soda works well, and lemons (antibacterial, skins for a wipe down) or a little ghost oil (and I do mean little or your food/water will be hot) , sand/salt works good also.
Don’t forget to check into some herbs, some of them have cleaning abilities and disinfecting qualities
