Keeping Chiggers Away
Gabe Fratzke asks: “I want to hear everyones input on keeping chiggers away from campsite. We were out over the holiday weekend and are all tore up from chiggers. I even wore tight socks and my feet are probably the worst. We used all kinds of bug sprays even the ground fogger stuff. Anyone have any input? We just started camping this year and this is very discouraging for my Wife and Kids as they are in discomfort too.”
Comment #1: First you should know chiggers will attack you anywhere you have tight fitting clothes. Thus the attack on the socks. Now to get rid of the….believe it or not paint the infected area w fingernail polish; it will suffocate them….I know sounds foolish but believe it from a long time country girl…
Comment #2: Chiggers build character, and keep the city folk and whiners out of the woods.
Comment #3: Sometimes, nothing you put on will prevent bugs from attacking you. Like many have said, it’s part of the outdoors. The key is to find something to wash with after the fact. I use T-Gel shampoo by Neutragena. It’s a coal tar shampoo, and after one or two total body washdowns with it, all the itching and bumps are gone.
Comment #4: I spray with Deep Woods Off from knees down, and when I get them then soak in hot water with a pound or more of salt in it. I tried everything else, but this worked for me.
Comment #5: I’ve heard about silver and Skin So Soft as well. When I was a kid we used OFF. We sprayed it heavy on clothes, shoes, seams in pants, everywhere.
Comment #6: If we still got bit we used nupercainal as it numbed the itching. But its not sold anymore. However, there is a generic version that wallgreens can order for you or you can get it online and it doesn’t smell as bad as nupercainal. Look and ask for Dibucane ointment. It stops the itching in less than 15 minutes. You can use it for burns, rashes or and skin irritations. Dibucane is proof thete is a God.
Comment #7: Well as far as treatment we soaked feet in hot water then put vicks all over affected areas then covered them with table salt let sit for bout 20 mins rubbed lightly sat 5 more mins and rinsed salt off with water…went to bed with vicks still on. That was tue haven’t had a single itch yet!
