How to prepare your family and your home for an emergency
Extreme weather such as storms, snow and flooding could impede your water and electrical power at any time and you may be prevented from leaving your home or even stranded. With this in mind, it is always a good idea to be organised for an emergency situation. You only need to cast your mind back to the floods in the South West of England in 2007 and more recently the heavy snow inScotlandin 2012 which caused power disruption to thousands of homes for many days. Here are some measures you can take to make sure that you, your family and your home are prepared for the unexpected.
1. Compile an emergency kit bag
Prepare an emergency kit which will take into account the basic items you would need if disaster strikes. Essentially the kit should contain supplies that will serve you and your family up to 7 days. When choosing your bag, think about the size and style as you may need to leave your property abruptly and having an oversized heavy bag which is difficult to carry may prevent you from taking it. This could leave you with no emergency kit to use so consideration in this aspect is extremely important and cannot be overlooked.
Your kit should contain the following essential items:-
w First Aid Kit and prescribed medicines
w Clothing for each person
w Sleeping bags
w Toilet paper
w Battery-operated radio
w Batteries
w Non perishable food and can opener
w Bottled water for each person
w Money and change
w Important documents such as birth certificates, photos and passports
w A mobile phone and charger
2. Install emergency lighting
For the event of power disruption, emergency lighting is a great alternative to torches and candles. First of all, you do not run the risk of the batteries running flat and secondly you are not going to burn the house down with these great devices. If an incident happens and you need to leave your property quickly, they serve much better than traditional methods as they save you valuable time and allow you and your family to exit your property safely. Emergency lighting is easy to install and more affordable and stylish than you may think. Before you install the emergency lighting, think about the areas of your home you use frequently as well as the key areas you would like to illuminate in order to find your way to the exit. If you are unsure, it is recommended to speak to a reputable installer for advice.
3. Discuss the emergency plan with your family
It’s important that you and your family are well versed in what course of action to take should an emergency situation arise. Your plan should contain the following:-
w Contact numbers for each family member and numbers for relatives or friends that live outside the area
w Agreed meeting places
w Routes to take in order to get out of the affected area
w How to switch off utilities
It is advisable to discuss where the emergency kit can be found in the home and what is contained in the kit. It is also good to write all the telephone numbers of each family member on a small card and hand one out to each person. This can then be kept in a safe place in either their purse or wallet.
Usually, in a disaster situation, common sense will prevail, however if you get the basics right and follow these simple tips, you and your family will find it much easier to cope with unforeseen circumstances that affect your home.
