Zeer Pot For Off Grid Refrigeration

Have you heard of the zeer pot?

The zeer pot is a method of refrigeration that does not require electricity. This method is widely used in hot countries where modern refrigeration or electricity is lacking like in Nigeria, Sudan and other African nations. The principle of zeer pot refrigeration is said to have been used by ancient people to make their food last longer.

The zeer pot works on the principles of evaporative cooling; the hotter the climate, the cooler the inner pot gets. The zeer pot will still work in humid areas – in fact it will work anywhere – but the inner pot might not cool down as much as in hot, arid areas.

Constructing a zeer pot is easy and the materials needed are readily available. All you need are a couple of terra cotta pots (one larger than the other; you can use glazed pot for the smaller one), some sand, water and a wet cloth.
