Underfold Ruger 10/22 Stock Review
Awhile back we did an initial review of the Underfold 10/22 stock and announced that Underfold Stocks had become an advertiser on this blog. We had a chance to install the stock on one of our carbines and here’s a real fast review of our experience.
The stock is designed to be a simple install and I’m sure that it is on most occasions but, with our usual Murphy-style luck, this installation had a few kinks. The first trouble we ran into was with the inletting at the rear of the receiver. It took some whittling away with a Dremel tool to remove enough stock material to allow the receiver to “drop” into the stock. The photo below shows the area that required fitting.
We thought that we were all done with the stock mods but realized that something was still wrong when we attempted to install the factory barrel band. It seemed like we had to fight with the barrel band as it was put into place. There was too much space between the forearm of the stock and the carbine’s barrel. We discovered that the action was “teetering” on the stock’s mounting lug. Ultimately, we ended up milling roughly .060″ off the top of the lug. The photo below shows the lug.
After removing stock material from these two areas, the carbine did indeed drop into place. The mounting bolt and the barrel band was installed which completed the project.
One more thing that I think is worth mentioning: there is no provision for a sling. We’ve considered many different ways to install a rear sling mount on this stock that would not interfere with the folding arms and we’re still thinking about the best way to handle that.
Overall I am very pleased with this stock. It looks good and this version works well with the factory iron sights. The carbine is now a more compact and packable hunting rifle. I REALLY like the fact that it utilizes the factory barrel band.
I want to stress that the work that was involved in fitting the stock to our carbine is not uncommon, at least for us. We are always running into delays and minor problems when we modify anything so you may or may not have similar issues installing this stock on your Ruger.
