The Baofeng UV-5R is an inexpensive dual band HAM radio. Can it live up to preppers expectations as a good survival radio? Check out the Tin Hat Ranch’s initial impressions of this budget radio.

In the video we also discussed:
GMRS License Information: http://goo.gl/En3lLi
Baofeng 3800mAH Battery: http://goo.gl/jo5aJh
Chirp Software: http://goo.gl/J7H5cs
Baofeng USB Cable: http://goo.gl/iwy3ir

Since the Baofeng’s offer the most bang for the buck in this type of radio we’ve decided to center the communications portion of the survival series around it.  The radio has only one real drawback, understanding how it works and programming.  Working together we can easily overcome these issues and ensure all preppers who take part in this series have decent inexpensive communications.  Stay tuned for basic programming tutorials.

It is illegal to transmit GMRS on the Baofeng even with a license because it is not FCC Part 95 certified so unless one has a Ham radio license they should not be transmitting on any frequency and then only on amateur frequencies. Here is the link to confirmation of this on the Miklor web site: http://www.miklor.com/uv5r/UV5R-FAQ.php#certify

In a SHTF scenario do you really think anybody is going to care what the FCC thinks about us transmitting over HAM radios?

    • MyProudFist

@ Paul: What effing difference does THAT make!?!? Speeding is illegal too… What’s your point? Or do you have one?

Why push the UV-5R when the new GT-3 is out, with better specs?

      • Tin Hat Ranch

Because the UV-5R is $30 and I am trying to get people interested in HAM radio. The radio is only the catalyst. If people buy a $30 radio and it sits on the shelf not much is lost. The new one is twice as much. That is pretty much the only reason.
