The Tin Hat Ranch has recently started our Soup to Nuts series and the foundation of that series is the “Rule of Three’s”.  To help this series along we’ve put together a monster giveaway.  While I generally don’t tell folks what to put in their Bug Out Bag (see our BOB 101 video) for a giveaway I have to pick out some gear.  So what I did was put together the gear that I use to cover the very basics, air, shelter, water, and food.  To top it off, I am giving you a bag (that I use) to put it all in.  While not a totally complete list of equipment it is the basics and it will keep you alive.

There is lots of junk on the market, it’s difficult to put together quality equipment on a budget.  These are products that perform as well as or outperform gear that costs 2, 3, and 4 times as much.  The gear below is that gear.  Here is a brief review of how this gear performs and how/why I chose it:

NEW! Schrade SCHF9 Extreme Survival Knife- Schrade makes some good knives and the SCHF9 if one of the best that they make.  If I had to describe it in one word, it would be a “brute”.  Excellent for chopping and batoning this is one solid knife.   It doesn’t hurt that this knife generally comes in at $40 bucks or less.  Check out our review of the Schrade SCHF9.

Israeli Civilian Gas Mask w/ Nato Filter- Poisoned air is probably the least likely scenario to befall you but if it happens the game is over.  While I haven’t “tested” this piece of gear by poisoning the air I can count on the Israeli’s.  This gas mask has been through a few trials and replacement cartridges are available.
