Benefits Of Bugging Out...North?

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

I’ve made my decision, even more than making my decision I’ve invested money, time, and sweat equity.  For better or worse, when the fecal matter hits the rotary oscillator I am headed north.  No palm trees and balmy January nights for me.  No endless sunshine  No Pina Coladas to the tune of waves cascading over the sand. Then again no hurricanes, malaria, and hordes of helpless people either.

I am gambling on human nature.  If you had to make a choice, would you follow the siren song of perpetual summer or head towards snow drifts?  Experienced preppers aside, when the grid goes silent and the cities start vomiting their filth only those that were driven that way out of necessity are headed north.  Those with any choice will be headed south.  It was incompetence, ignorance, or just sheer laziness that led them to be unprepared in the first place.  When finally faced with a decision that they have to make they are not going to make the seemingly more difficult one.

I’ve lived my whole life “North” and I’ve staked my bet even further North.  As I sit here we are experiencing one of the snowiest winters on record.  Cities are running out of money in their snow removal budgets.  Salt is popular here, for those of you not  from the North, it is the difference between 2 inches of snow causing an incident like happened recently in Atlanta and just another day.  The salt is just about gone, and it is February.  While I highly doubt this is going to cause anything more than mild inconvenience I need to shed light on the money and effort that makes travel possible in the North.

This brings me to my first point, travel.  The first reason I am headed North is simply because travel will be nearly impossible.   If cars are still running and gasoline and diesel are available, even on a limited basis, it won’t matter.  If the infrastructure isn’t there to clear the roads things will grind to a halt.  Even purpose built 4 wheel drive vehicles will find it impossible.  Heck, a snowmobile that is not set up for fresh powder can and will get stuck, I know this one first hand.  Long distance travel utilizing our familiar modes of transportation will be futile.

So why on earth would the inability to travel be top on my list as a reason to head north?  Simple, If I can’t travel, neither can they!  We don’t really know how the masses are going to react to a world changing event.  If we use history as a guide it isn’t too pretty.  As the starving masses search for sustenance they will take the path of least resistance.  Waist deep snow is not a scenario they are going to walk into. Have you ever walked in waist deep snow?  It’s a workout to say the least.  If you are in great shape count on half a mile an hour at best.  Besides the workout, snow will be cascading over the tops of any boots.  What are you going to do when you can’t dry them out?  Sure, snow shoes like these will put you on top of the snow but from experience, most folks don’t have them.  Only likeminded preppers or avid outdoorsmen even consider owning a pair.

I run through scenarios in my mind so often I wonder if it will eventually drive me mad.  Home defense might be near the top of your priority list whether you know it or not.  People will get desperate.   Those that choose North might welcome a November to April reprise from constantly worrying about intruders.  If someone does decide to come knocking the snow is going to severely slow them down.  Advantage: Homestead.   The critical time you have between detection and a required response is greatly enhanced if your assailant is moving at half a mile an hour.  That being said, it is a deterrent in and of itself.

Tracking is a skill that should be part of every preppers repertoire.  In the deep snow of winter tracking a human is very easy.  If someone was recently there, you know it.    The same goes for animals and anything that moves in the winter.  Casing your property will become difficult without being detected, even if detection occurs after the fact.

The cold also has inherent benefits.  Folks down south better become adept at salting, smoking, and canning meats.  Up north we just leave it outside.  No need for refrigeration here just put your food in an animal proof box or cooler.  If you do plan on powering your home via solar or wind you can check the refrigerator of the list from November to March.

Are you sure you’ve made the right decision?

Good lord that is funy. Thanks for the chuckles. Have to remember that one.

    • westside prepper

That’s right this guy is wrong don’t do what he is saying go south PLEASE SOUTH go there it will be perfect and you don’t even have to prep just go there

      • SkyWolf

We are moving North. Get ready.

        • AMERICA HAS RISEN

I have moved douth and live in Australia now.
The funny thing is Australians hate Americans.
They keep asking us how many innocent women and children we have killed.
At one coffee shop when they heard my American ascent they did not want to serve me but asked me to leave.
We are doomed. We Americans are now first in the worlds eye.
I’ve also lost my job, the don’t want to employ Americans.

        • Dustdevil

So, let me see if I have this right, Mr. ‘America has Risen’:

          You moved to Australia

          You are hated there

You have lost your job (apparently while there)

And you think America is doomed.

Obviously, your mirror is malfunctioning, and you have associated yourself with America. Please reference your current geographic location, your pitiful state of existence, and realize – WE AREN’T CLAIMING YOU AS A CITIZEN ANYMORE.

Your broken-state-of-existence should, by no means, be a reflection on many of the rest of us who actually know how to prosper, survive, or even get along with the rest of the world.

As for ‘hating America’, I haven’t been to Australia since 2003, but last there, not only did they like us in general (though not our government – then again, a lot of US don’t like our government, EITHER), I know that a lot of the Australian ladies liked American men, as they found us ‘quite gentlemenly’, compared to their ‘brute men’ there, who were more worried about BBQ, football, rugby and various other man-hugging, woman-excluding activities; and compounded by lots of domestic violence.

No, just because YOU don’t know how to survive in the world, don’t throw that weasel onto the rest of America as a one-fit blanket – this is your problem, mate.

    • Nativesonwon

I grew up in New Brunswick Canada & I visit often. This is a vey well reasoned, rational, practical & accurate description of all conditions favorable for survival during a grid down society. Well done. So much wilderness, so few people. It will definitely be a preferable location to quietly live your life, living closer to nature, thanking God for his provision, while the entire world is going to hell.

      • Ted

OH! ABSOLUTELY! Canada is the only place north of Chicago I think a southern refugee should consider as a bug-out location. Be careful as you pass through northern Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Upper Michigan; we don’t take kindly to “outsiders”!

        • SHARK-GULL

          And do NOT come to Northern New Hampshire or Maine, either! :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:
New Englanders HATE “outsiders”, and we will just let MOTHER NATURE take care of you!

But, in the spring, we will bury the bodies, so no diseases will bother us!

    • AMERICA HAS RISEN

Are you a fool or what? If a nuclear device goes off no electronics will work. That’s why the Obama White House just ordered 1200 bicycles.

    • COCONUT

Oh! And you think we might just open our doors to you with your gun-toting self-righteous attitude to kill for the fun of it???
      We’ve got laws here.

    • COCONUT

Oh! You think CDN is the answer – just bung out in the Adirondacks. Your got-toting self-righteous attitude wouldn’t be welcome here.
      We’ve got laws here!

      • Ted

Your writing skills need a lot of work, mate! You come off as an illiterate self-righteous knob. G’Day!

        • Omega Files

You should have seen how un-indoctrinated this person was when I told them that aliens are evil:

        • COCONUT

          By the way: Omega…
My beliefs concerning aliens are mine. And I’m far more intelligent than you think.

        • SHARK-GULL

Omega the MORON (isra-HELL jew shill for YOUR destruction – you can call him Cory) is a BIG fan of jesus!
          HAHAHAHAHAHA!
Oh, yea, and ‘aliens are evil, eh?
YOU ARE EVIL, omega the MORON!

    • COCONUT

Oh! Sorry but your got-toting self-righteous attitude wouldn’t be welcomed here!

    • THOTH

I’m in Ontario with 8 foot snow drifts on either side of my drive way. It’s -30 Celsius in the winter and +30 Celsius in the summer. If you come here seeking refuge and your are a good person then I wish you well. Un-indoctrinated lots of American citizens are not “gun” toting and self righteous. I know many Americans that come up here on business and to visit. They have always been respectful and good company.

      • THOTH

I mention un indoctrinated in my comment but it appears their name is changed to I question everything

      • COCONUT

THOTH – I know that they’re not all gun-toting and self-righteous – it’s just that they really come across being so. They have a lot of negative press because of all these senseless killings and their meddling in international affairs when (maybe) they should have minded their own business.
I’ve been following these posts for a while now and they are extremely NEGATIVE and narrow-minded.
Well, that’s my take on it.
I fell in love with a Canadian with dual-citizenship a decade ago unfortunately he went back to AK.
And yes, if they should wish to come and OBEY OUR LAWS and CUSTOMS why not? If they want to pay 15% sales tax on everything (as in QC) and in income tax fine.
There’s a saying: When in Rome – do like the Romans do…

        • THOTH

          I.Q.E.
Ya I hear ya. So many people come here in search of a better life and then attempt to change our customs or laws to suit them. I’m sorry to hear the one you loved left. Although at least you got to experience that love, so it’s not all bad right? As much as I am against Rome and their tyrannical history, I understand the saying haha
No hard feelings, have a great day.

        • COCONUT

          THOT – no hard feelings.

        • goodbees

In the scenario mentioned in the post, there will be no enforceable rules or laws here or in Canada, that is why he wants to go north in the first place, to avoid the unruly mobs (that includes Canadians) that will likely be headed south.

          Way to miss the point.

        • COCONUT

          GOODBEES:
I didn’t miss the point. His point is: I’ll go where no one can lock me up for shooting someone who cuts across my lawn.

    • Dustdevil

What a joke. I lived north of 45-degrees N Latitude for over a decade, and with decades of outdoors and survival experience, I can say first hand, I wouldn’t want to even BEGIN to think ‘post-apocalypse’ up there!

First off, assume a few things – no petroleum-based fuel, no electricity as a result, and short growing seasons. Now, get enough ‘locals’ staying ‘dug-in’ to make them hold in place, and you have a serious recipe for a mess.

It is one thing to think that a few thousand people could winter in, say, Northern New Hampshire or Maine in the winter. If you cut wood all day, every day of the summer, yeah, you can lay in enough hand-cut wood to survive a winter there; but try it with modern populations and you will strip that place clean of every tree there within 5-years. Wildlife for food falls into the same mess. It’s a challenge to take a single deer in deer-season in most New England areas, let alone trying to plan it as ‘your meat of subsistence’. Gardening? LOL, what growing season? You’re lucky to grow some cucumbers, some squash. Never going to get corn to grow, or tomatoes, without some serious greenhouse action happening.

Which takes us into ‘if I can’t travel, they can’t either’ in the event of hostilities. Clearly, you’ve never seen paratroopers, Marines that team-rope into a site via Air Assault, etc. No, they can travel via air where you can’t, and in Olympic athlete condition, chances are those government-issued cross-country skis are going to get them to you in about 2-4 hours, once they drop in. Dreaming? What a joke, we TRAINED for this exact situation in Norway when I was in the Marines!

No, what you are recommending is a one-way death march into an arctic tomb where you can’t cut enough wood with a handsaw to heat you for 6-months, while you can’t find enough protein and high-energy food to sustain you, while you are in the atmospheric drift-path of any western volcano that blows or bio-chem pollutant that is dropped, while you falsely assume that no one would ever use air transport to get hostiles to your location – so you are safe being ‘frozen in place’ in five to 15 foot deep snowpacks that can last 6-8 months.

Yeah, I’ll have what you’re drinking. Me? I’m headed to Texas – no parkas needed, mosquitoes are smaller (AND less-numerous than New England marshes), more area to hide, more wildlife, and contrary to myth, most of the desert will NOT be a tactical target for a bunch of German-speaking UN Troops, while major New England cities will be.

    • HiPower

      Diarrhea. It’s what I’m reading.

    • Hawbs

i love it up north! so peaceful and full of nature. we grow many things to eat. no neighbors is nice. just lovely birds and frogs. the people in the smaller burgs seem more caring and friendly. we live off grid. no bills. we have the best tasting water i ever had. thank you, Yah, for my piece of paradise on earth.
