Storing and Protecting Food and Gear with a Freight Glove

I was contacted by the Sentina Corporation to try out a product they manufacture called the Freight Glove.  The Freight Glove is a very large (51″L x 45″W x 62″H), air and water tight, vacuum sealed, reusable wrapper for protecting freight that is shipped on a pallet.  It is also flame retardant and able to withstand temperatures as low as -40°F and as high as 158°F.  All those properties are beneficial in protecting and preserving food and other preparedness gear, so I tested the Freight Glove out on some of my preps to see how it worked.

First I cleared a spot in my living room since it is the largest room in the house with any empty floor space.  The freight glove is designed to fit on a pallet, but I just put it on the carpet for the demonstration.  With the temperatures it can withstand, it could be used in a garage or shed in most areas of the US, but it’s winter and I didn’t want to go hang out in the shed to take pictures or make the video.  Call me a wimp.  I’ll put it to use out there when it warms up a bit.

The Freight Glove arrives with instructions, some zipper lubricant, and a vacuum adapter.  It is all wrapped up in a nice little package about the size of a large sleeping bag.

Then I laid out the Freight Glove on the floor of the room.  Have I ever mentioned that I live in a super tiny house?

Once the Freight Glove was opened up, I filled it with cases of #10 cans.  This would be ideal for packing up some long term storage foods and supplies that you wanted to keep together.  You could pack up a 3, 6, or 12 month supply of food depending on your family size and also include medical equipment, toiletries, and other products you may need.  I easily fit 27 cases of #10 cans (162 cans) plus a few buckets and other extras and had room to spare.

If it were on a pallet and you had access to a forklift, you could transport a whole lot of supplies from your garage to your bug out vehicle in a hurry!

When the Freight Glove is filled as much as you want, zip the air and water tight zipper closed.  Make sure it locks into place at the end.  The Freight Glove can be opened to access your supplies, then resealed as many times as you need and includes a tube of zipper lubricant.  It also does NOT matter if it is completely filled since the next step makes a custom sized wrapper for your own products.

Once the zipper is sealed shut, it’s time to vacuum.  Using any vacuum with a hose, you can vacuum the Freight Glove tight around your food and supplies.  An adapter is included with the Freight Glove to make it a little quicker, but will only work with a vacuum tube that is approximately 1″ in diameter.  I was able to make the adapter work with my vacuum that had a larger diameter because it had a bend in the tube that kept the adapter from being sucked down, but I was also able to just place the opening of my vacuum tube over the valve and vacuum the air out.

When the Freight Glove is vacuumed tight against your products, you’re finished.  You could place tamper evident tape over the valve and know if anyone accessed your goods if you want.

Due to the nature of the material the Freight Glove is made of, mice and other pests can’t smell your food through it and won’t chew through and compromise your vacuum seal.  So, in theory, your food could still be in sacks from the grocery store rather than other long term packaging before being sealed up in the Freight Glove.

Vacuum sealing your stack of food and other goods into one tight package also offers a degree of earthquake protection.  The boxes or buckets won’t slide off each other when they are shaken around.

The Sentina Freight Glove is available from Sentina Corporation for around $400 and is a quality built product that gives an extra layer of protection to your food or other preparedness supplies.
