Catching And Eating Rat

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Many people survived persecution in WWII Europe while hiding, by eating a lot of rat meat for protein. This is not a new subject by any means. Many parts of the world use different size rats as a source of food. Rat is an animal with meat on it’s bones, nothing more. They get a lot of bad press because they are blamed for plague and many other diseases. There is fact to this, as well as their feces is not healthy when breathed in if it dries out and becomes airborne.

Other than flea concerns and feces concerns when allowed to share habitation with humans, the meat is delicious and is a good source of animal protein. They are easy to catch and can be processed just like any other meat source animal. You can use a basic snap-style rat trap or a live capture cage. You can also catch them with snares that would be used in a survival situation. The best bait is peanut butter or crush nuts of some type, not cheese.

There are many species of rat. Some are very large and live on vegetation, just as their smaller cousins do. Rats eat bugs, grains, and just about anything they can find. They are they ultimate foragers. Large jungle rats in Vietnam were known to come out of the jungle and bite a piece of skin from a military person and scurry right back into the jungle. They were very large and aggressive.
