Easy DIY Homemade Water Distiller (Cool Video)

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Water is one of your most important preps, without it you can only last 3 days. Having alternative methods to purify your water is an excellent idea. Desertsun02 has come up with a very inexpensive way to make a homemade water distiller that can be powered by your electric stove, rocket stove or a campfire. A water distiller can not only purify your water but it can also turn salt water into clean drinking water. So check out this excellent video below and if you decide to make one I recommend using a stainless steel kettle that can withstand higher temperatures, incase you should have to use it over an open flame.

Perhaps one of these self tapped into a hole drilled in the kettle sealed with a water hose rubber washer.

Just like with most things, distillation is actually a very deep science, not just a ‘pour the water in, boil it, and capture the steam condensate as it comes out’ game.

Keep in mind, that boiling for 10 minutes, alone, kills all organic life in the water. So, viruses and bacteria are dead at 10-minutes. You can’t boil out metals, those you have to distill, so just distilling gets rid of them. BUT, how do you get out petroleums? Phenyls? Esters? How about all those liquid chemicals and medicines that are saturating water that have a liquid-at-room-temperature form factor? How do you get those out of water using distillation? Well, it can be done, but it is NOT as simple as many would have you believe.

To ‘stratification distill’, you have to have a boiling (candy) thermometer that is fairly accurate, and you have to use it as your key tool to know ‘when to start capturing your steam, and when to stop’. This is roughly the same process as distillation of alcohol. You start your ‘steam capture’ on a still for ethyl alcohol at about 170-degrees F, and stop the capture at around 175-degrees F. By doing so, you have captured your ethyl alcohol while leaving all water behind in the boiling vessel. This is ‘stratification distilling’, in that you have taken one thing out using different boiling temperatures (ethyl alcohol boils at 173.1-degrees F, while water boils at 212-degrees F).

How can you use this to ‘filter’ what you want, from what you don’t? Easy. Simply boil off everything in your pot until the pot’s contents hit 210-degrees (you have to start at a temperature lower than the anticipated lowest point of the fluid you wish to capture), then start capturing your steam and boil until the fluid in the pot’s temperature starts to rise above 213 degrees F. Now, stop the process, and dispose of any liquids still in your first pot. This is ‘heavy’ items you don’t want in your water, along with all metals and inorganics that you want to filter out.

In a lab, this can even be done to seperate methyl alcohol from ethyl alcohol, due to their different boiling temperatures.

Knowing how to seperate fluids based on specific boiling points can help you make clean water from highly contaminated water, relatively easily and affordably.

dustdevil is correct .. the waterstill above,, you are still trapping all the chems, meds, phenyls, esters, an anything that ends in zine..

i made an open pot type that a tube passes thru to a smaller sealed pot.. the water flows into the larger open pot by way of an ice marker float..

the capture ‘ worm ‘ tube flows back into the larger water filled open pot that cools the vapor an changes it back to water ..out the tube into a homemade ( everything is homemade btw ) charcoal filter then drips into a clay crock.

ANYWAY,, by accident,, the open pot at the top (hot water rises ) is always 180 F… that boils off everthing i’m ascared of.. i use a coffee maker heating element to make a boil.. get a gallon in 3 1/2 hours..

another ‘by accident ‘,, had to vent the off gasses out by way of a big upside down stainless salad bowl an stove pipe..

not because of the noxious gasses but the mold the ceiling was collecting.. thank lord for mold cause it wouldn’t of been vented otherwise..

water is a hassel.. an bottled water isn’t safe at all.. it just unreg water-in-a-bottle.. with bpa’s..
home filters are a joke.. it’s like going into a asbestos room with a paper dust mask on.. IT’S CRIMINAL.. an a false sense of security..

least i know i done did the best i could..
