Ruger 10/22 Takedown: The Ultimate Survival Rifle?

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

If you read my article a while back on the Ruger 10/22 then you know how much I like it as a great all-around survival rifle. However, the biggest issue with it fitting the “ultimate” survival rifle designation is due to its shortcoming that it can’t be broken down like the AR-7 or Marlin Papoose.

Well, about a year ago Ruger finally released a 10/22 model which now gives you the ability to take it down to be easily stored or carried in a small compartment or bag.

potential uses of the takedown 10/22

How does this rifle benefit peppers? Well, the most obvious use is being able to store it in a small container or compartment like your bug out bag. The standard and 22, while you can remove the barrel, still does not make compactible enough pieces to store in a middle to small size bug out bag.

This takedown model of the Ruger 10/22 is only 18 inches long. This will easily fit into most backpacks allowing you to conceal it such a way that someone would not know there is a rifle in there.

Another fantastic use for this is storing it in containers that would appear to be anything but a rifle. For example a full size violin is just a little over 23 inches so this 20 inch long at the maximum broken down would easily fit in a violin case.

Now, I plan on doing a A more thorough review of this rifle when I get it’s in the near future but I wanted to At least let you guys know or be aware of this great looking rifle.

which takedown version should I buy?

Ruger currently sells two versions of this takedown rifle.

The first version is a stainless steel option with a flash suppressor on it and the second one is a blued steel version that has a threaded and on the barrel.

Now obviously if you are looking to put a suppressor on this in the near future might be a great idea for nighttime hunting specially if you looking to be discreet then I would definitely pick the threaded version. You looking for a robust steal that can weather the elements then the stainless might be an option I think it would be a great idea if they had threaded version of the stainless but that doesn’t look like that is coming anytime soon.

In the meantime, here is a fantastic overview video of this rifle on how it breaks down and the accuracy of it:

My Marlin 22 did jam on me a couple of times new. Bought it a long, long, time ago when JC Penney use to sell them AND the ammo. Was such a bargain I use to buy my ammo from them!

If I had to grab one gun to survive a SHTF moment, then it would be my 10/22………..and don’t kid yourself, the .22LR will enable someone to have a bad day out past 400 yards……..I use the 40 grain CCI Velocitor rounds going about 1425 FPS…………….

I’ll stick with my Browing SA-22. The design is 100 years old this year but, it’s still the best of the rest. I’ve owned this gun for 50 years and plan on passing it to the kids.
