How To Make Your Own Toothpaste

Proper hygiene is still important when SHTF. There are some items for hygienic purposes that you can make at home in case your supplies are not enough or you run out of supplies in an emergency situation. One way of maintaining proper hygiene is brushing your teeth.

Here are three different kinds of toothpaste that you can make at home

1. The simple toothpaste

This formula is inspired by Stephanie Tourles the author of Organic Body Care Recipes. This formula is for single application, so it’s up to you to measure the amount you like in your toothbrush.

Materials:

• 1 teaspoon baking soda
• 1/2 teaspoon sea salt, finely ground
• 1 drop peppermint, clove, or citrus pure essential oil
• A few drops of water

How to do it?

• Put all the ingredients in a bowl.
• Mix them thoroughly until a thick paste is formed.
• Scoop the mixture with your toothbrush and brush as usual.

2. The vegan toothpaste

There are some commercials about toothpaste that claim to use glycerin to help maintain the texture of their product. However, the glycerin that they are using might be of animal origin and not vegetable glycerin. If you prefer vegan toothpaste with glycerin, you can try this simple recipe.

Materials:

• 2 teaspoons vegetable glycerin
• 4 tablespoon baking soda
• 1/2 teaspoon guar gum
• 8 tablespoons water
• 5 drops peppermint, clove, or citrus pure essential oil

How to do it?

• Get a pot and put all the ingredients in there, except for the essential oil.
• Cook on low heat; stir it frequently for five minutes until the mixture has a paste-like texture.
• Allow to cool, and then add the essential oil.
• Put the mixture in a sterile jar, and then store it.
• Use as you would a regular toothpaste.

3. Coconut-based toothpaste

Instead of using glycerin, you can use coconut oil in making your own toothpaste.

Materials:

• 6 teaspoon baking soda
• 1/4 teaspoon hydrogen peroxide
• 2 tablespoons coconut oil (warm enough to be liquid, which means above 76 degrees F)
• 10 drops peppermint, clove, or citrus pure essential oil

How to do it?

• Get a bowl and put the baking soda and the other ingredients in it.
• Mix until you get a proper paste texture.
• If the mixture is runny, add a small amount of baking soda. If the mixture is too dry, add more coconut oil.
• Taste the mixture; you can add some more essential oil to add some flavor in your toothpaste.
• Store the mixture in an opaque container. An opaque container helps protect the hydrogen peroxide.
• Use as you would a regular toothpaste.
