I might have used something cheaper, like older bacon drippings, instead of burning olive oil, which is comparably more valuable, but thought the water filter was a resourceful, good bargain.

Why waste perfectly good olive oil??? Buy a candle. they sell for pretty cheap. I can eat the olive oil. The candle, you are on your own there!!!!!!
