13 SHTF Sauces You Can Make From Home
Would you know how to make your favorite condiments from scratch if you were no longer able to get them at the store? It’s actually easier than you think! And with the right pantry staples and a well planned homestead, it is possible to make all of your favorite sauces from raw ingredients you’ve grown, harvested, and stored yourself.
Here are 13 of my favorite condiment recipes you can make from scratch…

1. Homemade Ketchup with Honey
Who could survive without ketchup? Okay, probably most of us, but it sure makes a juicy burger taste that much better on a hot summer day! What I love about this ketchup recipe is that it’s totally possible to make from ingredients you’ve harvested on your own property: tomato paste, honey, vinegar, water, onion powder, garlic powder… the only thing you’d have to buy is salt. Homemade ketchup can be canned and stored for years. I haven’t personally tried canning this recipe… I wonder if the onion and garlic powder might get too strong over time, but it’s something to keep in mind for when the SHTF.
2. Simple and Easy BBQ Sauce
Once you know how to make ketchup from scratch you can easily branch off from there to make BBQ sauce. Here’s my personal favorite barbeque sauce recipe. I’ve scoured through dozens of BBQ recipes, and this is the simplest, easiest to make one I’ve found yet. This stuff would be amazing to brush over broiled or grilled canned chicken legs. Liquid smoke, sugar, salt, and molasses can be stored for years, and make great food storage staples.
Makes 4 cups
- 3 c. ketchup
- 2 c. brown sugar (2 cups sugar + 3 Tbsp molasses)
- 3 Tbsp liquid smoke
- 1 tsp salt
Mix all ingredients together over low heat until thoroughly combined and heated through. Store in the fridge.

3. Spicy Maple BBQ Sauce
If you wanna kick it up a notch and add some spice to your BBQ sauce, you might try this hot concoction sweetened with maple syrup. If you don’t happen to have coconut amino acids, you can substitute with your favorite soy sauce. Everything else in this recipe can be made from things you’ve grown and harvested yourself.

4. Homemade Mustard
I got so excited when I found this mustard recipe! I love growing mustard greens. I’ve saved the seeds in the past, but I’ve never made mustard (the condiment) with them for the simple fact that all of the recipes I found were more time consuming than I cared to commit to. But this one… with only three ingredients how much simpler can it get?! All you need is mustard seeds (which you can grow), apple cider vinegar (which you can make from apple scraps), and water. Definitely another one to print and keep handy!
Prefer Dijon to regular yellow mustard? Here’s a great recipe to make it from scratch! You’ll need to grow two types of mustard to get yellow and brown seeds for this Dijon. Yellow mustard is of the Sinapis hirta variety. Brown mustard is of the Brassica juncea variety. The seed company you purchase from ought to tell you of which variety the mustard is. Again, this one can be made from ingredients you’ve grown yourself- with the exception of lemon depending on where you live. Since we can’t grow lemons here, I’d simply omit it.
If you’ve never tried making mayonnaise at home, you’re in for a treat! I’ve been making this mayo for about five years now, and have thoroughly enjoyed the savings and convenience it has afforded us. It’s so easy to make, you just might never go back to store bought again. Plus, you’ll need it to make this homemade ranch dressing…

7. Homemade Ranch Dressing
Here’s a simple and delicious looking recipe for ranch dressing from scratch– all you need is a cow or a goat and you’d be set!
This is my go-to Italian dressing recipe. Everything you need to make it is shelf stable and can be stored long term. If you grow your own herbs you’re halfway there!
Did you know that horseradish is super easy to grow at home, and actually makes a great companion plant in the garden and orchard? Here’s a great recipe for using freshly grated horseradish to make a killer condiment for steaks and other meat dishes. Keep handy that Dijon mustard recipe that I told you about- you’ll need it to make this tasty sauce!

10. Fermented Fish Sauce
Love a good fish sauce? Honestly, I’ve never tried it so I can’t give you my personal opinion. However, if you’re into learning how to make everything you can from scratch, this looks like an amazing condiment to try. Everything you would need to make it could easily be grown or harvested locally- except, again, the lemon juice which is regional. What do you think… interesting?

11. Hollandaise Sauce
Eggs, pepper, lemon juice, and butter is all you need to make this creamy and filling topping. Enjoy it drizzled over poached eggs, fish, chicken, venison, root vegetables, asparagus, fresh tomatoes, green beans, artichokes, and broccoli, to name a few ideas.

12. Worcestershire Sauce
Remember that fish sauce we learned about? You’ll need it to make your own homemade worcestershire sauce! You’ll also need honey, molasses, soy sauce, and a few choice spices. Here’s another worcestershire recipe that doesn’t use fish sauce for an even simpler alternative.
I’m pretty sure that if the SHTF my husband would be pretty sad if he couldn’t have steak sauce with all that sirloin we have in our freezer. Never fear, hubs! I’ll just combine my homemade ketchup, worcestershire sauce, and dijon mustard with some vinegar and a few key spices to make this delicious copycat recipe. You can slather that sirloin to your heart’s content!
Got another favorite condiment to add to the list? (Recipes, please!)
