Water Storage and Saving Ideas

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Water is super important. It’s incredibly super important.  The average Canadian goes through 400 liters of water a day in cooking, cleaning, bathing, washing, etc. I think Americans go through even more. And if you’ve been reading the news, water is getting scarcer and scarcer. Places in South America are running bone dry. California isn’t far behind (And places like L.A., millions strong without their own water supply, can you imagine?). Water is life and you need to store some especially if you end up having to shelter in place while the plebes kill each other in their panicked mobs.

So, I thought some water storing and saving ideas might be in order.

Water Storage

  • Every time you go grocery shopping, by a 10 liter jug of water, then store it in a cool dark place in your house. They are cheap right now, at least where I am. Make sure it’s spring water and not that nasty R.O. stuff. Spring water has minerals your body will need when nutrition isn’t what it is now.
  • Purchase a WaterBob.  If the power goes out or some disaster happens the water should still work for a little while. First thing you do is put the WaterBob in your bathtub and fill it up before the water turns off. If you have more than one bathtub you buy more than one WaterBob.
  • You should have at least one rain barrel. At least. I’ll actually be making my own sometime this spring and I’ll post it here.
  • You could always get some water bricks for strong, stackable water storage. Honestly any clean non leaching storage container will do.
  • Consider a backyard pond. Even better if you have fish in it. You can purify it for drinking or use it for sanitation.

Water Saving

  • After TSHTF, there’s no more water, no more flushing. Even if you have a lake near you that you can haul buckets to fill up your toilet tank, if you live in a low lying area (which is likely if you’re near a big water source) that sewage can back up into your house. So, peeing and pooing is outside. You’ll have to dig a hole, and I would build a cover for that hole with a seat that can lower. You might want to think about having a privacy option.
  • Washing is now a sponge bath. Small bowl of water, a little soap, and a sponge or washcloth. Don’t waste too much water but don’t neglect hygiene, either.
  • When cooking pasta, save the pasta water. You can use it again to cook more pasta or rice or beans. Plus it will have some starch from the pasta in it and after TSHTF any calorie is a good calorie when calories are scarce.
  • It’s been my experience that drinking water slowly helps the body absorb it better, and chugging it makes me pee more. I don’t know if that’s true, but I’d sip your water to make every drop count.
  • Ensure proper clothing so you reduce sweating as much as possible. If possible take frequent breaks when doing hard work. Avoid the hottest parts of the day and stay cool indoors during them if possible.

Those are my ideas. Any more would be welcome!
