The Semi Automatic .308 Rifle

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

I have been thinking about a semi automatic .308 for awhile. Now that I picked up the little .380 a semi automatic .308 is the only decent sized remaining hole in my battery.

The .308 rifles are expensive to purchase and more expensive to feed.  They are also heavy and none of them are especially common. That niche market has been split between the M1A, FN-FAL, HK G3/ PTR 91 and the AR-10.

I do not have the time or energy to discuss all of them. The M1A is stupidly expensive and one can argue the M14′s legend is actually a myth.

The FAL is a fine rifle, at least the decent ones (Genuine FN, Springfield and DSA) are but they are expensive and so are their mags. Even a Century knock off runs a grand these days.

The PTR-91 is a solid rifle at a very aggressive price point often under a thousand dollars. Being honest aside from collector value they are probably as good as a genuine HK. Commander Zero favors the PTR-91. Even today the mags are around 4 bucks a pop.

The AR-10 has so much promise but it has been a train wreck off a platform. Many of them suck and there is a complete lack of standardization. The Army adopting the M110 SASS (Knight SR-25) may help in time. Some of them work but they are big time expensive. The new DPMS Hunter G2 shows a lot of promise but isn’t really tested, might have proprietary parts (I don’t know), and they don’t really make a configuration I am in love with.

There is promise now that folks are generally moving to the M110 style and Magpul is making mags for them. However I do not think it is quite there yet.

Here is what Max Velocity think. Max Velocity talks about the semi automatic .308 rifle.

In general semi automatic .308′s are big, heavy, low capacity and expensive. Also the ammo is heavy to carry so most people end up bringing less of it along. While not optimal they can be used for close quarters work.

On the plus side the .308 hits hard, especially at range, is good at going through cover/ vehicles and can be used to legally and ethically hunt medium to large game. Also since their ammo fits most ‘precision’ rifles you can have two rifles and only need to stock one type of ammo. The combination of semi auto mag fed anti personnel capability with hunting and long range capabilities make it, in my opinion, a useful rifle to have. Also if I was stuck in a ‘one rifle’ situation a .308 like a PTR-91 would bring a lot to the table.

Next year (or sooner if I stumble into a wad of cash) I will probably purchase a semi auto .308. As of right now I feel like the best option is a PTR-91. Thoughts?

Personally, I’d forget the PTR-91. AR10s are increasingly becoming more common with parts being more readily available. Just go get yourself an 80% DPMS lower and build it yourself. The cost of doing it that way will even be cheaper than going out and buying a PTR. Find a couple buddies to go in and buy the .308 lower jig. They’re only $150-$200. I know a lot of machine shops who will help set it up for you for a small fee. Save yourself $500+

If you’re gonna build it yourself off of an 80% billet like the other guy suggested, all you need is a 10 inch drill press, the right bits, and a digital caliper to accurately set your depth, along with the correct jig. Start to finish, if you take your time and do it right, it’ll take you about three hours to ream it out.

I’m going with the PTR too. Price is very good from cdnnsports.com, $850 when on sale. I want the pistol version for $950, small and concealable, heavy semi-auto firepower.

I have a SAR 48 HB with Israeli marking on all parts except the lower receiver. LOL, it weighs 16 pounds with the bipod. I bought 6 30 round German mfd mags to compliment the 35 20 round mags I already had.. Very accurate rifle, as accurate as I can shoot anyways. It has a nice smooth low pull trigger with no creep. I can lay down with the butt stock hook hung on my shoulder and fan the trigger with devastating effects at 50-100 yards. This rifle would be used for defending a position. I’m stingy with my ammo so I’ve only put 200 rounds through it. Really cant afford to shoot it much. I would much prefer an AR-15 for a carry about.

i think for most AK47 is a lighter and better option, its lower cost, faster followup shots, larger mags, same big bullet that makes you able to hunt pretty much the same as a 308 if its a survival gun. I see it as a more versatile weapon, you only have 400 yards or so effective range at most cause of bulletdrop but when you are stressed and tired from walking on foot you wont be able to shoot better than that anyway. An AK47 can be used by women and men alike, noobs and experts, and maintained servicable by a chimpanzee, while you need a certain skillset to be able to take advatange of the 308′s potencial and you need stamina and strength to carry it on foot for long periods of time.

AK47 is a rifle for everyone, PTR-91 is a rifle for physically fit men trained in shooting age 20-50, basically a soldiers weapon.

      Comparison:

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AK-47
      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PTR_91F

So my take on it is: Are you a young or middle aged male, or do you have a son, are you able bodied and do you like shooting plus have good economy? Then consider PTR-91 (more spec. id get the GI model)

Are you poor, have mostly women in your family, you smoke cigarettes and arent that much into shooting but want a rifle just in case? Get an AK47 instead.

AK47 combined with PSL and/or mosin nagant make a descent, versatile rifle setup with the ability to stockpile plenty of ammo for a low cost.

You can get a Norinco M305 (M1A Knock off) from Canada for about $400 USD. They take M1A parts, function great and are reliable, just the finish isn’t as good as the Springfield … but hey… you’re not out to win a beauty contest.

      What’s your guys’s take on S&W MP10 with a bump fire stock? I own a MP10 and am considering getting a bumpfire.

      • kletus_ledbetter

I know several people that have bump fire stocks, they all wish they hadn’t wasted their money.

        • Bruce Prentis

          Thanks

        • srsly1

I agree. While they are fun to play with, there really is no logical reason for it. Unless you just like spending money, then go for it.

Beg to differ on the M-14. I qualified high expert and series high shooter in 1968 boot camp qualification. Open sights at 200-300-500 yards – this rifle was excellent. I won the Leatherneck Medal and was asked to attend sniper school, which I declined as I wanted to go to the Nam and sniper school would delay my deployment.

At any rate – this rifle was superb and we used standard ammo, I could imagine if we had been issued “match” ammo. A 12 inch center at 500 yards, open sights, and a 5″ group, is equal to near any sniper rifle today, and again that was with “standard” issue ammo. Dependable, has great range and penetration, although the rifle and ammo in .308 is a bit heavy. Depends on the need and situation. But as a .308 with excellent accuracy, dependability, and easy breakdown and maintenance, you can’t go wrong. I even had a M-14 for my first four months in Nam before we were given the M-16, which I also liked.

Sounds like you are set on a tricked out military or assault rifle, but have you considered a Browning Bar. I had one and they can be picked for $6 to 8 hundred., they are low recoil, hard hitting, and are more accurate than one can shoot them, my nex choice would be the same rifle in 7mm magnum. I have shot that caliber and it is deadly, it will pierce 1/4 inch steel plate, and a 308 will just leave a dent in the steel, the 7mm will go straight thru and that is with hunting loads, a alternate consideration.

      • p0lym0rph

7mm is a good choice. But you will pay extra for the ammo big time.
