When hikes go wrong..

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Did you get any hikes in this weekend? http://www.adirondack.net/…/2015/03/when-hikes-go-wrong.html What do you think?

Top Facebook Comments:

  • Absolutely………..There is no reason that taxpayers should have to foot the bill for people who do stupid things or take risks. If you can’t go for a hike and get back home, then you shouldn’t be going for hikes. Invest in a GPS which would be a lot cheaper than having to be rescued and if you had to pay for that rescue, you probably wouldn’t get lost. And for those morons that insist on climbing Mt Rainier in January, then need to be rescued, they should definitely have to pay that cost and also be banned from leaving their house again.
  • If it’s due to negligence I say send them a bill, similar to a hospital. If you have to pay $20 a month for the rest of your life, then so be it, but it’s on you. In other words, they’re on the hook for it, but at the same time aren’t losing their homes, etc because of it…..if that makes any sense. Point being, you send them a bill and expect them to pay. You re-coop whatever they end up paying as opposed to just hiking taxes on everyone and not expecting the responsible party to pay a cent.
  • It absolutely should be billed to the person that was rescued. If you get hurt and are transported to the hospital by ambulance, should that be the taxpayer’s bill? We are adults and are responsible for our own actions. I don’t expect anyone else to pay for my problems. Most of these rescues could be avoided if people would learn some simple landnav, take essential gear with them and make responsible decisions.
  • Careful what you wish for guys, you never know when it might be you. I’ve seen some pretty seasoned people end up in some pretty bad situations. Whatever your opinion on this always take a first aid kit some water and something to eat. You never know when a day hike might turn into getting laid up somewhere for a week or two. It happens all the time. And if you have someone to hike with take them, that one is getting hard though with all the lazy people around.
  • This is a real douchey thread. You’ll pay taxes to buy bombs and to pay for developing bio-weapons (which costs wayyy more) without batting an eye though, right? ….just leave them out there to die then, count ur money.. Lol
  • They are responsible for their own person. If I am at home and fall I am responsible for the ambulance to take me to the hospital.
  • If there is a hazardous weather warning they should. Otherwise i don’t mind if tax payers do.
  • Oh we can send billions of dollars to other countries (such as iran) but we have to charge lost hikers? Yeah that sounds like more BS to me. I do agree that hikers should know what they are doing for navigation though. A GPS isn’t all that much money. You can get one used on Ebay for $20.00 if you play it right.
  • Yup 2 with my 9y.o. Son. Gotta start em early
  • I think people who walk around at night and get robbed should also pay their bill for the police. After all, it’s their fault for getting robbed.
  •  I agree to a certain point, especially the part you said about hiking in January, that is pretty dub and you should be penalized if you do a terribly dumb thing like that, but I don’t think any and all emergencies should result in penalty. Should the person who goes out after dark and gets robbed be denied police or rescue services because they should have known better? I think each case should be taken at face value and if a person has acted recklessly, then fine them. Hard to believe, if we are talking about the same incident, this is someone educating our kids, and they aren’t smart enough to stay off the mountain in winter, says something about our educators.
  • The rescue of lost or injured hikers should be paid by the rescued or injured. Most of the time it is stupidity that got them in trouble.
  • Sell them insurance policies when they log into the area.
  • The hikers.
  • The person(s) that benefit should be the person(s) that pay.
  • Yes – 27 of us picking up illegally dumped trash in the bush – 9100 lbs in a day!
  • Why do first responders want to be paid again when they do the work We the People have paid them to stand by for?
  • I believe the states should bill the ngligent hikers for the cost of their rescue. Too many people venture out without proper gear or a realistic idea of distance and weather conditions. It would be nice, too, if hikers could buy insurance to cover their rescue if they, through no fault of their own, become injured or have a health problem while in the wilds.
  • Let them buy insurance to cover it before they go out.
  • If they are judge to have been irresponsible in their actions I think they should have to pay part of the rescue cost. But accident do happen. I don’t think just because money is tight every where we need to try to make every person who needs rescue to pay for it. What will be next ? Paying for a firetruck to come to your house? Do you want police to ask for a credit card before they help you?
