People constantly ask me why I am a prepper. Well, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize that this world and our times are changing. I was born in 1970 and in my 44+ years on this planet, I have seen and lived through some major catastrophes.  I had seen some major events in my life, but they were spaced apart by many years. To me, it didn’t seem like the events were growing in power and intensity , until I saw the events of the last 10+ years.  After watching some of the worst catastrophes on record, I decided to do a little research about natural disasters.  In the past few years we have seen:

Some of the worst earthquakes on record:

A 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck in New Zealand’s South Island, in Aug. 2003. It was the largest earthquake to strike the area in decades.

A 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck in Iran, on Dec. 26, 2003, that killed over 30,000 people and left scores of people homeless.

A 9.2 magnitude earthquake struck in the Indian Ocean, on Dec. 26, 2004, that killed over 280,000 people and left 1.1 million homeless. This is the 2nd largest and deadliest earthquake of all time and is the largest since 1964 and it caused a tsunami that devastated Asia.

A 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck in Pakistan, on Oct. 8, 2005, that killed over 79,000 people and left 3.3 million homeless.

A 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck in China, on May 12, 2008, that killed over 80,000 people and left 5 million homeless and over 18,000 missing.

A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck in Haiti in January 2010.  It killed close to 160,000 people, injured over 6,000 people and there are over 2,500 people still missing.

A 9.0 magnitude earthquake struck in Tohoku, Japan in March 2011.  It killed close to 16,000 people, injured over 6,000 people and there are over 2,500 people still missing.

Some of the largest hurricanes/storms on record:

Hurricane Fay became the first storm in recorded history to make landfall in Florida four times. Thirty-six deaths have been blamed on Fay. Damage from Fay was quite extreme, but a specific cost of damage is unknown.

Cyclone Nargis struck Myanmar, on May. 2, 2008, and killed over 138,000 people (This number could be grossly understated). It caused more than $10 billion in damages. This is the 2nd deadliest cyclone of all time.

Hurricane Wilma struck Mexico, Cuba and Florida, on Oct., 2005, and killed 63 people. It caused more than $29.1 billion in damages. This was a Category 5 storm and was the most intense hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic.

Hurricane Stan struck Mexico and South America, on Oct. 4, 2005, and killed over 1800. It caused more than $1.5 billion in damages.

Hurricane Katrina struck the U.S., in Aug., 2005, and killed over 2000. It caused more than $81.2 billion in damages. This is the costliest and one of the top 5 deadliest hurricanes in U.S. history.

Typhoon Shanshan struck Japan, on Sept. 9, 2006 and killed 11 people. It caused more $2.5 billion in damages. This is the 6th costliest disaster worldwide in 2006.

Cyclone Gafilo struck Madagascar, in March, 2004 and killed 363 people. It caused more than $250 million in damages. This is the most intense cyclone ever to form in the south-western Indian Ocean.

Typhoon Mindulle struck Guam on June 23, 2004 and killed 56 people. It caused more than $317 million in damages. This triggered the worst floods the country has seen in 25 years.

Some of the worst flooding on record:

In 2002, two-thirds of Sylhet, Bangladesh was submerged due to severe flooding.  More than 10 million people in southeastern Asia were affected and the death toll to nearly 400 in Bangladesh and more than 1,100 in South Asia. Officials are calling the most severe monsoon floods for 15 years.

In the Dominican Republic, in May 2004, two weeks of torrential rain have caused flooding so severe that they are calling this the worst natural disaster to have affected their nation in the last 100 years.

New England Flood of May 11, 2006. Worst flooding since the New England Hurricane of 1938.

Hurricane Katrina in 2005 flooded parts of Louisiana.

Midwest Floods of June and July 2008. Killed 13 and damage estimated to be in the tens of billions. Some of the worst flooding on record.

In October, 2012, Hurricane Sandy struck New York and the surrounding areas, causing massive flooding and destruction.  233 people were killed and damages exceeded $68 Billion.

Some of the worst fires on record:

Unprecedented fires in California, burned during June and July of 2008. During the month of July only, there were over 2010 separate fires ravaging nearly 1,109,891 acres. This affected 12 counties and pulled in over 25,000 firefighters to California to help stop the blaze. 8 people died during these fires.

Fires in California, burned during October of 2007. 1,500 homes were destroyed and over 500,000 acres were burned. This affected 7 counties and pulled in over 6,000 firefighters to California to help stop the blaze. 14 people died during these fires.

The spread of disease all around the world:

A Wash. Post article said that 33 million people world wide have AIDS. (our current population in the USA is 304,311,422. That would be 1/10th of our population.)

3.2 million female adolescents estimated to have at least one of the most common STDs.

Even with all the modern medicines, medical knowledge and prevention, syphilis and gonorrhea are back on the scene and are on the rise.

With all the diseases and now superbugs out there, we are now seeing a continued high prevalence of resistance to both penicillin and tetracycline which has remained above 22%.

The Avian Flu claimed at least 200 humans in Indonesia, Laos, Vietnam, Romania, China, Turkey and Russia. Epidemiologists are afraid that the next time such a virus mutates, it could pass from human to human. If this form of transmission occurs, another pandemic could result. Thus disease-control centers around the world are making avian flu a top priority.

Rise in Volcanic activity:

This was an interesting find.  I found a website that dealt with disaster statistics (http://www.preventionweb.net/english/hazards/statistics/?hid=72).  I researched how many volcanos have been reported since 1980.  Here is the overview:

1984 – 7 volcanos
1991 – 10 volcanos
2006 – 12 volcanos
2014 – Had 20+ active volcanos
2015 – Had 40+ active volcanos

Data Comparisons

I wanted to see the data for myself to see how many natural disasters we have encountered and how the numbers have gone up over the years. I found a website () that details all this information and you can run queries on certain types of disasters over certain years and exactly how much damage was created. I ran a few simple queries on disasters around the world (in 15 year segments) starting in 1910 and ending in 2008. I’ll show you the overview. The results show exactly what the Bible predicted:

1929-1910 – 56 earthquakes worldwide
1959-1940 – 95 earthquakes worldwide
2008-1990 – 518 earthquakes worldwide

1929-1911 – 5 volcanoes worldwide
1957-1943 – 17 volcanoes worldwide
2008-1990 – 108 volcanoes worldwide

1929-1910 – 51 storms worldwide
1959-1940 – 172 storms worldwide
2008-1990 – 1,782 storms worldwide

1929-1910 – 4 wildfires worldwide
1959-1940 – 5 wildfires worldwide
2008-1990 – 232 wildfires worldwide

1929-1910 – 14 floods worldwide
1959-1940 – 92 floods worldwide
2008-1990 – 2283 floods worldwide

1929-1910 – 3 famine worldwide
1974-1960 – 3 famine worldwide
2005-1990 – 56 famine worldwide

1929-1910 – 16 pestilence (epidemic, disease, etc.) worldwide
1959-1940 – 5 pestilence (epidemic, disease, etc.) worldwide
2008-1990 – 899 pestilence (epidemic, disease, etc.) worldwide

That’s only 7 types of natural disasters. As you can see, the numbers have gone up dramatically. Obviously, we will be seeing more and more events as these and unfortunately, they will be getting worse and worse.

Besides looking at nature and statistics, I also looked at the Bible to see what it said about the end days.  I’ve proven over and over again that the Bible is the only religious book in the world that has verified and fulfilled prophecies.  I can trust this source and I will combine it with this study to see if there are any correlations.

So what does the Bible say about natural disasters in the end times?

Matthew 24:3-8 - 3 As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” 4 Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. 5 For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many. 6 You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 7 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of birth pains.

Luke 21:11 - And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.

Luke 21:20-25 – 20 “When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you will know that its desolation is near. 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city. 22 For this is the time of punishment in fulfillment of all that has been written. 23 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people. 24 They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. 25 ”There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. 26 Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken.

Revelation 6:12-14 - 12 I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, 13 and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as late figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind. 14 The sky receded like a scroll, rolling up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place.

Revelation 8:5 - Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and hurled it on the earth; and there came peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning and an earthquake.

Wow.  According to the Bible, this earth is in big trouble.  Now, some of you may not believe the Bible, but you have to admit, all of the above prophetic statements are coming true daily and are getting worse.

So why am I a prepper?

A funny quote from the “Incredibles” movie says it all…  “Luck favors the prepared!”  I also like the quote, “Trust in God, but keep your powder dry.”  You never know when one of the above events could come knocking on your door.  As for me, I want a fighting chance to get through it alive and I may be able to help others around me during the ordeal.  Having even the basic elements of survival (shelter, fire, water, food) can give you the first steps you will need in an emergency.  Why take a chance on your life?  I would rather spend $$$ on survival food and gear now and not need it then to be in a disaster and not have it.

Imagine if disaster did strike your life…  Imagine lying there in rubble with no gear, food or coming rescue.  $100-200 would have saved your life, but now all you have is despair, pain and suffering.  Isn’t your life worth $200 in preparations?  I think it is and that is why I am a prepper.
