Nathaniel:

For myself to own:

T48 FAL

US trials FAL made by H&R and High Standard in the mid-1950s, very similar to the Canadian C1 with stripper clip guide, but with square trigger guard. Definitely a “rifle that might have been”.

If I couldn’t own that (none exist on the registry, despite thousands being made), I’d settle for a grandfathered 1950s Belgian g-prefix sear-cut FAL. Alex has one, and it’s sweet. This was unbelievable to me at first, but even with a bipod and sling, it was lighter than Alex’s GI-stocked GI-profile barrel M1A (so basically an M14, but lighter because it lacks the auto connector).

B-B-B-BONUS ROUND:

Winchester G30R select-fire variant

.30-06 cal Winchester development, designed by David Marshall Williams in the early 1940s, who was psychotic, never made in a select-fire variant, although a select-fire automatic rifle variant with a different stock and bipod was made, called the “WAR”. DMW is one of my favorite small arms designers in history (in large part because he was nuts), and I also think a select-fire G30R would be a trip to shoot, since it only weighed about 7.5lbs.

I’d like to see on the market:

“Domestic”-looking (“low ban observable”) 16.3” bbled semiautomatic rifle in .30 Carbine with MSRP below $900 and weight less than 5 lbs unloaded w/o mag. I know this is possible, but no one has done it. I think the market is ripe for something like this, because the age of cheap M1 Carbines is done, and there’s relatively little that fits the category of something you can buy for grandma out in California that she can actually use to protect herself. Doesn’t have to be in .30 Carbine, but that would be a good choice. (Ryans note: Maybe .357 Magnum?) N: Sure, that’s another option, but .30 Carbine is rimless and still really common. Also, I admit I want .30 Carbine to become really popular again.
