The .300 Blackout was introduced in 2009 by Advanced Armament Corporation (AAC) for use in the AR-15 platform. Any standard 5.56 AR-15 can easily be converted to .300 Blackout by changing the barrel. Its main purpose is to be loaded at subsonic velocities for use with a suppressor.

The .300 Blackout is the first SAAMI standardized round based on the .300/.221 Fireball wildcats, though the Blackout was designed to be built off of the 5.56 case.

With a wide selection of bullets available in .30 caliber, the .300 Blackout is suitable for taking game as large as whitetail deer, when loaded at supersonic velocities. The adjustability of the AR-15 platform and the low recoil of this round make it an excellent choice for smaller stature hunters.
