I Smelled Fear and Loathing

We had just arrived at the facility to meet the engineer looking for help with a project when he came out to the entrance to meet us. Tall, straight-backed, close cropped and no facial hair clued me before he spoke that he was currently, or recently had a military background. I am at ease with these types, whether or not I agree with why they do what they do, so we hit it off right off the bat.

One of the young men with me is an ex-Marine who fought in the ME and he knew, as well as I did, the kind of person we were dealing with. Another employee arrived and was introduced, with one of the first statements being that the young man’s last day was today and that the new guy would be taking over the project going forward.

I asked, “Where are they sending you”, feeling that he was being deployed somewhere. He answered, “Syria”.

“Guard?”, I asked.

Yes, sir.

“Why Syria, of all places (knowing full well what the real answer is, but chomping at the bit to know what this guy thought)?”

“They are sending us there to keep those people from killing each other.”

(I know that the look on my face had to have compassion or ‘care’ or something because he immediately became very stoic and put on the brave face, while simultaneously cracking with a hint of… was it fear?)

I said, “Man, I’d just soon keep you and your company here protecting us when needed than going anywhere else to ‘keep those people from killing each other’. Let ’em go. None of our business.”

“It’s probably nothing…” he muttered as that fear became even more evident.

These people are canon fodder and know it.

We did our thing (you could tell this guy was very bright and knew what he was doing at work) and as we were finishing up, standing outside, we all said out goodbyes, committing to project steps going forward, then we all thanked the young man and wished him the best (prayers and well wishes).

We started walking away and I turned to look him in the eyes one last time and I just felt that he knew he might not be coming back. I tried to give him a positive glance and acknowledgment, but I am not sure if that lie was obvious. Maybe it was the tears that gave the lie away.

I hate the jew wars.
