Council of Great City Schools Promotes Gun Control Resolution

U.S.A. –-(Ammoland.com)- The Council of The Great City Schools, which claims to be “the nations voice for urban education,” has unveiled a resolution that it is asking it’s 60-member school district to review.

The resolution claims to be about school safety, but it appears to be about gun control. The group also says that they are standing in solidarity with the students of Broward County Public Schools even though recent articles have pointed out a lot of students and teachers in Broward County say they do not support gun control.

The resolution pushes Congress to extend the perimeter of gun-free school zones. Every school shooting happens in a gun free zone, so it is unclear how this would make schools safer. In fact, according to Crime Prevention Research Center, a little over 98% of all mass shootings since 1950 have happened in gun-free zones. Going by these number the expansion of these zones would make schools less safe.

Another step that The Council of The Great City Schools would like to see is the banning of the manufacture, sale, purchase, possession, and use of “assault weapons.” Although the resolution doesn’t define what their definition of what an assault weapon is we can assume that it is referring to AR15s and similar rifles. Rifles (not only semi-automatic rifles) are responsible for less than 500 deaths a year. This number includes suicides and accidents.

The group would like to see a ban on “large capacity” magazines. The resolution once again fails to state what they consider to be a large capacity. It also seeks to ban ammunition that these rifles use. Hunters use these rounds in hunting as well, but the resolution doesn’t address that concern.

The Council of The Great City Schools is an educational non-profit that says that they support the teachers, but they do not trust the teachers enough to be armed. In fact, they stand firmly against arming teachers. They wrongly claim that there is no evidence showing that arming teachers would make schools safer. It doesn’t address the fact that there are school districts that allow their teachers to carry concealed firearms and not one has been a site of a mass shooting.

The resolution also calls for universal background checks. We have seen that background checks would not have stopped any school shootings. The Sandy Hook killer killed his mom and took her gun. The Parkland killer passed a background check, and the Maryland school shooter stole his father’s gun.

The resolution list school shootings dating back to the 1980s. The majority of those school shootings do not involve semi-automatic rifles. It is unclear of the motives of The Council of The Great City Schools asking for a ban on semi-automatic rifles.

The resolution also lists specific “facts” without citing the sources for these statistics.

The resolution says that, “Americans are 25 times more likely to be killed with a gun than people in other developed countries.”

That statistic is false. According to NPR the United States ranks 31st worldwide in gun deaths. The stat includes suicide and accidents. Even if you don’t remove those deaths, Americans are still not 25 times more likely to be killed with a gun than other developed countries unless you don’t consider countries like Austria, Switzerland, and France as developed.

This resolution is about mass shootings. The authors should have looked at mass shooting statistics. You are more likely to be killed in a mass shooting in Norway, Serbia, France, Macedonia, Albania, Slovakia, Finland, Belgium, or the Czech Republic than the US. Those countries have strict gun laws and a high rate of mass shootings.

The Council of The Great City Schools does ask for more federal funds for the member school districts in the resolution. I called The Council of The Great City Schools and asked if the resolution had anything to do with increased funding to their member schools. The women who answered the phone told me that they would not be answering any questions via phone.

What gun owners can do is show up at school board meeting to express their concern about the resolution. They can educate the board members of the actual facts. A lot of board members accept the stats in these resolutions as gospel because they don’t have the time or the will to fact check the resolution. Gun owners need to have their voices heard.
