One Out Of Three Americans Is Afraid Of Civil War

Nearly one out of three, or 31% of likely U.S. voters, think that a Second Civil War will break out within the next five years, a Rasmussen poll calculated. Disturbingly, more than one out of 10, or 11% of likely voters, think a Second American Civil War is “very likely.”

The truly frightening aspect of Rasmussen’s numbers is that politically-active Americans, those who are more likely be familiar with the political situation, are more afraid of Civil War. Over one-third of Democrats (37%) and nearly one-third of Republicans (32%) are afraid that a Civil War is about to break out.

Just 26% of independent voters, who are less likely to be politically active, are afraid of a Civil War. The more active an American is in politics, the more likely he or she is afraid of his or her neighbors.

The fears of an internal conflict within the U.S. are widespread. Around 84% of Americans are worried about political violence. Meanwhile, Rasmussen found that just 16% of Americans were not at all concerned about a Civil War.

Americans Are Afraid Of The Left

Americans are also very afraid of the Left, Rasmussen found. About 59% of voters fear that opponents of President Trump will resort to violence.

In addition, Americans are almost as scared of Trump supporters as they are of the Left. Around 53% of those Rasmussen polled were afraid that pro-Trump media critics will resort to violence.

Plenty of Americans are afraid of what they are hearing around the water cooler and at the corner bar. Passions in the country appear to be more violent than many Americans are willing to admit.

Rasmussen surveyed 1,000 likely voters between June 21 and June 24 to get its numbers.

Congressman Thinks Civil War Coming

“America is heading in the direction of another Harper’s Ferry,” U.S. Representative Steve King (R-Iowa) tweeted on June 24, 2018. “After that comes Ft. Sumter.”

Harper’s Ferry was the federal arsenal in Virginia (now West Virginia) occupied by anti-slavery zealot John Brown and his followers in October 1859. Brown’s plan was to start a civil war by arming slaves with government guns.

Many historians think Brown’s raid triggered the Civil War by making Southerners afraid of the North. Fighting in the Civil War began in April 1861 when Confederate artillery fired on Fort Sumter. The Confederates fired on Fort Sumter because it was one of the last Union Army bases on Southern Soil.

King’s civil war tweet was prompted by a news story about protestors occupying a federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office in Portland, Oregon on June 23, 2018. King is scared because of the parallels between Harper’s Ferry and recent protests against federal authority.
