What Everybody Ought to Know About Emergency Essentials!

I get it..thinking about emergency essentials sounds scary!
Gathering these items means that there may be something bad around the corner right??

WRONG

Emergency essentials are exactly what the words mean. It means that you have all of the essential items on hand…If there was ever any emergency!
This could be as big as a hurricane, tornado, and earthquake to something as small as a power outage or even your car breaking down so you can’t go to the store for a few days.

Basically, you want to be able to have anything you need so that even if you are caught off guard one day, there is no need to worry because, hey, you’ve got your essentials.

So let’s take a look at some of the most important emergency essentials that you need to have.

• Water:
  Water is your number one most important item that you will need to have on hand. Depending on the size of your family, you’re going to adjust the amount of water you have to fit your needs. If you have pets, you’ll need to take this into consideration as well when prepping.

• Non-perishable food:
  Gather foods that do not expire for extended amounts of time. Since you don’t know exactly what may happen, it’s better to have an excess of food and not need it, than to need it and not have it. Again, people with pets, don’t forget to include food for your favorite little companions.

• First Aid Kit:
  You don’t need to go out and buy the fanciest first aid kit in the world. The basic first aid kit that includes items such as bandaids, neosporin, gauze, alcohol wipes, etc. are just fine. This isn’t to cover a major injury of course, this is just in case you have a minor issue and need to be able to care for it. You probably have these items in your home already! Just put a little kit together.

• Flashlights and/or Candles
  You’ve gotta be prepared for when it’s dark out BUT it is imperative that you have either batteries or matches, otherwise these two items will be useless to you. A perk of having the candles and matches on hand. If it’s cold out you’ll already have something to make a fire! On the flip side, if you are outside, the wind could easily blow that candle out, making the flashlight that much more important.

• Shelter:
  Obviously, if you are at home, then you have shelter. In case you need to leave your home for any reason, it may interest you to have a tent, blankets, and sleeping bag with your shelter essentials.
  
  

Other than the shelter, the basic items should be minimal enough to take with you in a backpack or small duffel bag. This is something you can grab on the go that will get you through any situation. Speaking of the backpack or duffel bag, we recommend to just have an emergency bag packed and ready to go at all times.
The last thing you want to worry about when something happens, is running around and trying to remember where you put everything.

Now, these are what are considered the bare minimal emergency essentials, but of course there are many items that could be important for us to have on hand.

• Personal Items:
  Clothes, hygiene items, etc

• Entertainment items:
  Magazines, deck of cards, etc. This can help to pass time and keep stress levels down.

• Tools:
  Can opener, utility knife, etc

• Battery operated radio:
  This helps in two ways. The radio can give you important weather/emergency updates OR it can be a source of entertainment. Just be sure you have plenty of batteries!

The list goes on.

Really, when you are gathering all of your items, start with the items that are most vital to your survival and make a list of what is necessary for you and your family.

If you decide you have the space, you can always include more items that will make you feel more comfortable that aren’t necessarily essential to survival.
Everyone’s list will be different to meet their own needs.

Preparation isn’t scary or silly…
…It’s just plain smart!
