Fair Tax Misinformation

In North Carolina District 11, a large glossy political mailer is going out misrepresenting the Fair Tax saying that Republican candidate Jeff Miller “wants you to pay 23% sales tax on everything you buy.” And that “Miller’s plan would force North Carolina’s middle class families to shoulder a much larger tax burden.”

But is that the truth? Let’s see:

That’s all rather frightening, isn’t it? After all, who would want to see their grocery, gas, food, prescription drug – or any other bill, for that matter – increased by 23%? Answer: Not a soul. So what sane candidate would ever propose such a tax increase? Answer: No sane candidate would.

So … where are these ads coming from? Even the most baseless of attack ads must have a grain truth to hold on to, if for no other reason than to avoid generating nothing other than ridicule and laughter.

Congressman Larry Kissell, Senator Blanche Lincoln and the NEA Fund for Children and Public Education are all aiming these attack ads on opponents who support The FairTax (H.R. 25), a bill introduced by retiring Republican John Linder from Georgia.

Let’s answer the primary charge first. Does the FairTax really establish a 23% national sales tax? Yes, it does. Does it add that tax to the price of your groceries? Not really. Here’s what the attackers don’t tell you. The key here is that the FairTax first removes all of the embedded taxes that are already contained in the price of all consumer items. The FairTax is added as a replacement for already existing taxes, not an addition to those taxes. The retail price of the item remains essentially the same…

Help Stop The North Carolina Democratic Party Campaign Lies About the FairTax

Last week the North Carolina Democratic Party sent out four 8 1/2 x 11″ mailers misrepresenting the FairTax and Candidate Jeff Miller’s openness to learn about this tax reform plan. The cut & paste design of these ads are designed to deceive an illiterate citizenry. Please help enlighten our political class that we are on to their misinformation campaign and we want to enlighten them about what Americans want – honesty.

As a long time FairTax supporter, I am outraged that our politicians & political parties publish outrageous lies about a bill in congress that has $22 million of research behind it and is supported by 80 top economists. We must end these scare tactics that are based on lies! Let’s flood the NC Democratic Office with our calls and let them know we won’t be deceived by their pathetic disingenuous campaign tactics.

Call Monday & Tuesday and keep their lines busy. Maybe we can keep them from doing more damage. Call to inform. Call to complain. Call to talk about the World Series – JUST CALL! Call early, call often! These ads were not put out by the Shuler campaign – they are an anti-Miller campaign. Whether you are a democrat or a republican, please let the political elite know we won’t tolerate half-truths, deception or political games!

(and ridding us all of tax paperwork & the IRS!).

1. The FairTax replaces the income tax, FICA, death tax and corporate taxes and breaks the power of the IRS over individuals and businesses that don’t engage in retail sales. (Imagine the savings without that beaurocracy!)
2. Under FairTax, no American is taxed on items up to the poverty level. Since there are no tax deductions taken from paychecks, middle class Americans will have more buying power. Corporations will no longer be an additional taxing entity and can lower their costs of production or pay their employees more. (The government recieves the first 15% of wages in FICA payments; half from the worker & half from the employer – that is a big chunk out of an individual’s paycheck and an even bigger chunk from a business that pays for every employee and increases their prices to you to cover the expense).
3. The FairTax would NOT cost middle class North Carolinians nor any Americans more! It will cost the lobbyists their ability to buy tax legislation by contributing to political campaigns. Our political class does not want to lose this cash cow. We have 70,000 pages of tax code that we never asked for – who did?
