State Rep. Jenny Horne Trying to Block School Choice in SC

District 94 State Rep. Jenny Horne apparently thinks school choice in SC is not something parents should be encouraged to exercise.  This sounds like Democrat thinking to me. No Democrat has ever run against her, and why should one bother? Because on the topic of school choice, she’s doing their work for them.

Horne recently went up against her house Republican colleagues to oppose H.4894, which is co-sponsored by a passle of folks, and she’s reportedly trying to block a vote because (I’m just supposing here) she’s afraid it’ll probably pass. (Note that school choice is one of our legislative priorities this year.)

Among key provisions of H.4894, it allows a) $2,000 tax deduction for expenses paid for a student to attend a home school, b) $4,000 tax deduction for tuition, textbook and other fees, c) deduction of  school-related transportation paid for a student to attend an independent school, and c) $1,000 deduction for public school students to attend a school district which is not their school district of residence and other provisions.  As a parent trying to do the best for their children, to counter the liberal crapola being foisted on them every day in many of our public schools, what’s not to like about this?  Oh wait, tax deductions and credits will reduce the total take going into the state coffers to be used for other cool stuff,. like pouring ever more money into public schools.  Never mind then.

So, exactly why is Rep. Horne against this bill?  Could it be that the liberal education establishment feels threatened and she’s getting some pressure? Find out by calling her office at (843) 412 8420 or (803) 212-6871.  Let her know what you think. 

By the way, did you know Rep. Horne ran successfully for her seat UNOPPOSED in both 2008 (her first term) and again in 2010? And unless someone files as a Republican before the deadline to challenge her in a June primary, she’ll run unopposed again in November (assuming no Democrat will step up).

I don’t like it when people run for office unopposed.  Unless the person is certified conservative, and I’m not sure about Rep. Horne.
