Here’s to the Silent Majority

The other day someone asked me what the Tea Party was doing because he didn’t see much activity with regard to the upcoming election. I provided him with an answer similar to this:
We are the ones who go to call centers and make the phone calls. Some of us participate in sending voter information through the mail. We walk neighborhoods urging people to vote and encourage them to register if they haven’t already.

Many of us have attended meetings in Newark, Toms River, and Morristown to urge the state to rewrite the New Jersey Development and Redevelopment plan so that it will protect property rights. As it is currently written it does not. None of the meetings were local. They took our time, but we went because we know protecting our property rights is important. We still don’t know the outcome of these meetings, but are hopeful that our efforts will make a difference.

We make countless phone calls to members of Congress and our state government officials. Some of us have faxed almost every member of Congress over one piece of legislation or another. We visit town hall meetings, send emails, study documents, and write letters. Many of us attend Freeholder’s meetings and our own township meetings to see what is going on or to express our opinions. This all takes our time and effort. Just because people don’t see these things doesn’t mean that we are not active.

Many of us donate as much as we can as individuals to individual candidates. There’s a lot of competition for donations. Many Tea Party members feel that it is imperative that we elect more Conservative members to the Senate and donate to Senatorial candidates. Others focus on donating to organizations that support the issues they believe in. We are not all alike in our thinking, but I would say we are all united in our feeling that the country is headed over a fiscal cliff.

We realize that Washington is not the only area that needs our attention. Some of our members are now on township committees and planning boards. We must have a voice in our local governments. Many of us attend Freeholder’s meetings and our own township meetings to see what is going on, ask questions, and express our opinions about issues that concern us.

Most Tea Party members have never been involved in politics of any kind before and we are learning to maneuver in a system where you need a scorecard to figure out all the players. We are just people who are stepping out of our comfort zone because we feel the future of the country is in jeopardy. Unfortunately, there are people on both sides of the political aisle who would prefer that we shut up and go back to sleep. It is much too comfortable for them to keep everything the way it is. That is one of the reasons our country is in such trouble.

The upcoming elections will not solve all of the problems that our country is facing. Americans must continue to educate themselves, be prepared for some tough times ahead, and get involved. The Tea Party may well be part of the silent and concerned majority quietly working behind the scenes for the country we love.
