Guns Don’t Kill People; Liberals Kill People

Friday’s mass shooting at a school in Connecticut was a tragedy for the nation, but a welcome opportunity for liberal anti-gun activists.  Indeed, the shots had barely fallen silent when a number of political and media personalities positioned themselves in front of cameras and microphones to call for stricter gun laws and other ridiculous actions which would only allow similar shootings to occur more easily in the future.  Claiming one second that the nation had to “come together and put politics aside,” the left immediately followed this request with demands for increased legislation, less personal freedom, and an even more intrusive federal government.

Cutting through the emotional kneejerk response to such a trauma, most thinking people know that murders have occurred all throughout human history, and guns are only one category of murder weapon.  We know it is statistically evident that violent criminals seek out targets such as schools precisely because they know their victims will be unarmed and they have the greatest chance for achieving massive casualties without being stopped.  We know that the presence and actions of armed civilians typically succeeds in stopping criminals and saving lives.  We know this, but liberals don’t really care.

The unfortunate truth is that on some level, whether consciously or unconsciously, liberals know that stricter gun laws will not save lives, but that is irrelevant to them, because that is not their true goal.  Governments have always recognized an armed populace as an obstacle to overcome in consolidating power, and they have treated them as such.  One of the first actions of any aspiring dictator is to disarm the citizens.  Liberal policymakers are less interested in taking guns out of the hands of dangerous criminals than they are in disarming law-abiding innocents.  This mindset runs hand-in-hand with the transition of the Democrat Party from an organization which used to concern itself with the well-being of the general public, into an entity which routinely sides with big government and dictatorships.

Barack Obama shed crocodile tears for the cameras when he addressed the nation on this latest shooting, but just how authentic can we believe him to be?  First, the man’s entire life is a lie, from his personal documentation on down, so there has never been any reason to trust him from the start.  Second, we know he will say anything if he believes it will grant him a favorable media sound byte, then turn around and behave entirely differently when the public has its back turned, as he has proven repeatedly over the past several years.  He also has a habit of inserting himself into the equation as a sympathetic character, as he did in the Treyvon Martin shooting by claiming Treyvon as the son he never had.

But most importantly in understanding Obama, we have his voting record as a reference to judge how strongly he values innocent lives.  While in the Illinois state legislature, Obama repeatedly supported laws legalizing infanticide by allowing babies who survived attempted abortions to be put to death.  He made a special effort to approve of this, because his regular habit at the time was to cast his vote as “present” rather than to be on record as voting for or against any given legislation.  When a man so firmly stands on the side of putting countless babies to death, why should we believe he can be moved to tears when twenty children are shot dead?

One of the attempts by liberals to explain to us why we cannot outlaw abortion is their claim that it would simply result in criminal methods in place of government-approved procedures, substituting medical implements with coat hangers in filthy back alleys.  Despite what laws might be passed, despite the legality, they remain convinced the practice of abortion will always be prevalent.  Why then are they so convinced gun violence would go away if we outlawed guns?

Similarly, liberals are always telling us we need to legalize drugs because people will break the law to use them, but they do not apply this same logic to gun ownership or gun use.  There is no law which could be written and does not already exist which would discourage murderers from using guns.  Rather, gun legislation only serves to restrict the rights of those citizens who desire guns to protect themselves from those criminals who already disregard and violate the law.  Guns are already out there and the technology exists; the genie is not going back in the bottle, no matter how much we might wish it would, and trying to force it will only succeed in getting people hurt.

Obama’s onetime majordomo Rahm Emanuel—himself a committed gun-control advocate and mayor of the murder capital of the country—once famously opined that “a crisis is a terrible thing to waste,” effectively revealing the administration’s intention to exploit any national misfortune for their own political gain.  They have acted under this doctrine following the meltdown of the Democrat-engineered housing crisis, when dealing with unemployment, economic conditions, and on everything else which has come along since.  Such a crisis was exactly the sort of situation the administration hoped to create when Obama and Eric Holder secretly manufactured the “Fast and Furious” program which delivered American assault weapons into the hands of Mexican drug cartels.

Curiously, the murder of border agent Brian Terry is one of the few firearm-related tragedies liberals seem reluctant to blame on the accessibility of the gun.

I would go so far as to say that Barack Obama and those like him were not only unmoved by last week’s shooting, but were in fact immediately giddy at the thought of the opportunity this bloodshed might provide them to curtail gun rights.  We have always known that Obama and his allies have opposed the 2nd Amendment, as they oppose the vast majority of the Constitution.  Obama once stated that he views the Constitution as a list of “negative rights” because it only addresses the rights of the people, rather than the “rights of government,” which are the only rights which concern a statist.

Barack Obama has not yet even begun his second term, and already he is demonstrating an arrogant intent to expand the abuse of his power to achieve his goals.  He accidentally revealed to us–in his friendly discussion with the Russians–that he was looking forward to not having to be accountable to the voters in any elections after 2012.  The federal government already imprisoned an American citizen–the film-maker they scapegoated to divert attention from their own culpability in Benghazi–because it was politically convenient for them to do so.  Even before the shooting, fellow leftist Harry Belafonte opined last week that Obama should simply imprison those who speak out against him.

We have only seen the tip of the iceberg of Obama’s agenda to trample our rights, and the 2nd Amendment is the right which guarantees the protection of all others, including the 1st.  The Founding Fathers guaranteed our right to bear arms not for hunting purposes, but specifically to prevent an abuse of political power like what we are seeing today.  They realized a well-armed citizenry was the best defense against an oppressive government, because they themselves had just successfully used one to overthrow the other.  The first shots in the Revolutionary War were fired to prevent the British from disarming the colonists, an action the British were taking precisely because this would have left the colonists defenseless for whatever atrocities came next.

Obama and the left intend to use the blood of innocent children as their latest weapon against the Constitution and the American people, declaring a war on guns as the next battle in their war on our freedoms.  This is an affront not only to basic decency, but also to our rights and the spirit of our nation.  It is a battle even more important than any we have seen yet, and it is a battle the liberals cannot be allowed to win.
