My Thoughts on Gun Control

I keep hearing the protest over proposed laws banning firearms.  There is no way I am getting involved in the US fight over this, but will say in Australia, I am glad we don’t have the same attitude towards guns.

When I was young and in the RAAF, I bought a .22 rifle and after realising I didn’t need it,and sold it so that little hands could never accidentally get to it in my home.  People have argued that that wouldn’t happen as they would lock their guns away, but then, they aren’t much use in a home invasion are they?  And they can’t be carried on the streets in the same way knives can’t do how do they protect you from muggings etc. ?

And as far as protecting students, do you want teachers to have a loaded weapon in the classroom, because that is where these things occur, And when a teacher would try to protect the kids.  I wouldn’t want it, and as soon as they lock up the weapons, they are no longer a part of the argument for self defence.  Unless you carry the weapon with you, it is no longer a argument for self defence, and unless you sleep with your gun, it is no longer a argument for self defence.

And the moment you point the gun at some one be prepared to take a life, because if they are armed you will not necessarily get a second shot, if you hesitate you will not get a chance to shoot and unless they are threatening you, it is no longer self defence, it is murder.  And bear in mind just because someone comes through your window, does not mean it isn’t your family, or just a drunk entering the wrong house.

So when do you carry a gun, when do you use the gun and when do you kill someone.?  You see few people can shoot someone in the arm or leg  in a stressful situation, and that is why we are taught to aim at the chest which is the largest part of the body.  Few people can kill another without suffering some form of breakdown, and very few circumstances will not mean charges laid against you for using the gun, whether you hit or miss the alleged aggressor. Which leads me to my next point, you have shot at some one and missed them, what happened to the bullet?  Every bullet has a certain distance it can travel, and of course the further it travels the less harmful it may be, but it has to stop somewhere, are you prepared for killing another person or child because you missed?

Again charges would be laid against you.  So are gun control laws worthwhile?  I would say looking at the above yes, because any of the above could happen, if we all can bear arms.  But as it stands far less possibility of deaths occur with guns under strict control.

These are my views, a guy who was taught how to shoot and respect a firearm, but doesn’t want changes to our current gun control laws, as it would not protect the innocent.
