Republican legislators. Who can tell them from the gun grab libs? I can’t.

Earlier this week H3478 “Standards for home schooling programs” was introduced in the House, cosponsored by Reps. Brannon (R), Horne (R), Anthony (D) and Jefferson (D).

Jefferson has since pulled his name from the bill. I hear Anthony will soon pull his. Funny .. the two DEMS are going to back off, but school choice is a Republican party platform issue. RINO much Reps. Brannon and Horne?

The homeschooling community, who are FANTASTIC activists for their cause, sprang into well coordinated action, organizing very quickly on Facebook and sharing responses they have been receiving from their contacts with legislators. I’m going to copy in several statements they received back from legislators:

“The bill was written in response to some families using the homeschooling laws to play the judicial system in cases of child abuse/ neglect/truancy, and both men said that although the issue is real and serious, the bill itself was a “knee jerk” reaction and not a good solution.”

“There have been severe cases where children who were supposedly being home schooled under the third option were being neglected or abused. One case in Dorchester County even involved the death of a child.”

“He also mentioned a child who had not been in public school but was off the grid was found starved to death under his father’s care after his father claimed to have been homeschooling the child.”

So this bill was proposed in a knee-jerk reaction to a neglect/abuse issue which has NOTHING TO DO with how parents choose to educate their kids, but is really the purview of Child Protective Services and law enforcement. And the mental health professionals. Yet in the exact same way as the gun-grabbing libs blame guns for the societal ills leading to tragedy, Reps. like Doug Brannon, champion of the secular, big government school system blame a neglect situation on homeschooling. Rather than address the actual problem, Brannon would rather take away individual choices and liberty.
