In early 2008 when Obama’s political pariah Jeremiah Wright was feeling the wrath of Middle America for his “G-d damn America!” comments, he had more pressing problems: The IRS was breathing down his neck for, shall we say “irregularities” in his church’s finances, Trinity United Church of Christ.
An odd fellow with an odd shaped bald head and a smile painted on his face showed up on Jeremiah Wright’s doorstep one day. His name was William Wilkins. Willie to his cronies. He was a high-priced tax attorney with the law firm Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr. And he was there to save the day. In a matter of weeks with a sleight of hand reminiscent of a magician, Jeremiah Wright’s tax problems went away. The fee? Pro bono, the lawyers call it. No charge.
But the quid pro quo wasn’t complete. When Barack—Barry to Willie Wilkins—was swept into office in a rush of “Change You Can Believe In,” Barry had a place for Willie in his administration: He was made the IRS Chief Counsel, with a cushy office in Washington, D.C.
But for anyone who knows about Chicago-style quid pro quos, they know it’s like a ping pong ball. It just goes back and forth. And this time was no different.
When Barry assumed his throne in January 2009 and began doling out taxpayer money like a printing press on steroids—the banks and banksters, his union buddies at GM, and his crowning achievement, the trillion dollar “Stimulus” bill—the mega movement Tea Party was just a glint in conservatives’ eyes.
First the Tea Party was a few citizens holding signs decrying Obama’s out-of-control spending. But before you could say “Barry Soetoro,” the Tea Party movement had become a snowball crashing every liberal policy in its path, culminated in taking back the House of Representatives in the 2010 mid-term elections.
And they needed to be stopped.
