Can Government Be Run Like a Business?

Back in my working career years, this was one of my favorite graphics.Still is….

It works perfectly in private business for anyone wanting to deliver a quality product to a customer that’s paying them for it. And quality is defined by the customer, who knows what he wants and what he’s willing to pay to get it. If the product satisfies all of the customer’s requirements, whatever they may be, then by definition, it is a quality product. And the customer is satisfied.

Of course, it wouldn’t work for most governments since most governments a) seldom consider the taxpaying public as customers; nor b) whether anyone actually wants their particular “product”; and c) are driven to deliver “something” no matter the cost or other impacts. The only thing that most elected officials worry about is getting re-elected; bureaucrats working under them worry about changing bosses.

Those are reasons why most governments —- least of all our federal, as now structured —- cannot and never will be run like a business, regardless of politicians’ and bureaucrats’ pronouncements. Of course there are exceptions, such as those at municipal, county, or state levels) that are smart and responsible enough to operate with surpluses, not crippling deficits and accumulated debt. And that actually seek voter input, not just ram unwanted products down their throats.
