Saul Cooperman to Speak on September 17th

We are pleased to announce that Dr.Saul Cooperman will be speaking to the SCTPO on Wednesday, September 17th. His topic for the evening will be Islam and Individual Liberty. Please join us for an informative meeting at the Bridgewater Library at 1 Vogt Drive, Bridgewater, NJ 08807 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Dr. Saul Cooperman received his Bachelor of Science degree from Lafayette College in 1956 and earned both his master’s degree (1964) and his doctorate (1969) from Rutgers University. Saul has been a classroom teacher, high school principal and school superintendent. In July, 1982 Saul was appointed by Governor Tom Kean as New Jersey’s 21st Commissioner of Education and he served in that capacity until 1990.

In 1987, Saul was elected to the governing board of the National Assessment of Educational Progress, whose charge is to issue biennial “Report Cards” on the state of American education. In 1991 he created the New American Schools, the nation’s largest reform effort of the 1990’s. This undertaking was endorsed by President George H.W. Bush and President Bill Clinton.

He has made presentations to President George H.W. Bush at Camp David and Presidents Reagan and Clinton at the White House. Saul was honored for his work in education by President George H.W. Bush at a Rose Garden ceremony.

In July, 1990 Saul became President and CEO of the READY Foundation, which provided educational assistance for inner-city New Jersey youth. At this time he created the 10,000 Mentors program, which became the largest mentoring program in the state of New Jersey. In 2004 Saul created the Academy for Teaching and Leadership, an organization dedicated to improving the performance of teachers and administrators.

He is author of two books, How Schools Really Work, and Eddie and Me. Saul is author of 67 published articles. He has been listed in Who’s Who in America since 1984.

He is married, has three children, five grandchildren and lives in Bernardsville, New Jersey and Bonita Springs, Florida.

Saul is proud of his record as a lifelong educator. About 20 years ago, however, as he first heard about Osama Bin Laden, Saul felt the need to better understand those powerful forces in the world that affect us all. He has since applied the same dedication and diligence to this endeavor that served him so well in his career as an educator. We are privileged to have him speak to us at our meeting on Wednesday, September 17, 7 PM at the Bridgewater Library. His topic will be Islam and Individual Liberty.
