He carried this flag prior to every game he played in. It flew over a base in Iraq, which was one of the places he was stationed during his service:

As the NFL tends to choose younger candidates for teams, Boyer elaborated on why that shouldn’t be an issue:
“I have that mental edge. I’m not an elite athlete. I am an endurance athlete. But I know what it takes and I am willing to sacrifice whatever I have to get there.”
But there’s a deeper reason for what he’s doing. He explained:
“One of the reasons I am so ambitious is because I want to inspire people (especially veterans), who are maybe struggling with something, to stop letting excuses or other people dictate what you are capable of. Putting imaginary limits on yourself is just foolish. You can literally do anything you commit yourself to. So stop sitting around feeling sorry for yourself and go do it!”
Boyer, who plays the position of long snapper, added that he is just hoping to make the team, and that he ‘will be successful or die trying.’
