Plans Unveiled For Proposed New Spartanburg High School

Spartanburg School District 7 Superintendent Dr. Russell Booker announced a proposal Tuesday to replace Spartanburg High School with a new campus on the East side of Spartanburg.

The new high school, costing an estimated $128 million, would be built on 145 acres of land on East Main Street next to Home Depot.

Dr. Booker says remodeling the current school as a high school would not be cost effective and that Spartanburg needs to be a 21st century high school.

The superintendent will formally propose his plan at the School District 7 Board meeting Tuesday evening. No decision is expected to be made at that meeting.

The school district will have to hold a referendum if the plan is approved by the school board.

Under the plan, the current high school would be remodeled to become McCracken Middle School.

The district will also be holding four community forums to get input and feedback from the community on the plans:

• Wednesday, October 14 – Spartanburg High School Atrium
• Thursday, October 15 – Spartanburg High School Atrium
• Tuesday, October 20 – Carver Middle School
• Wednesday, October 21 – Chapman Elementary Media Center
