CIA Director John Brennan Probably Isn’t a Communist

He’s not a duck, either, but he talks like one and hangs around with other ducks who speak the same language. Relevant is Brennan’s visit to the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation last week, where he told the left-wing crowd that if he could get into the CIA with his record, so could they.

The Foundation has close ties to the Congressional Black Caucus, which has more than 40 members with backgrounds so criminal and extreme that each of them rates a special page at DiscoverTheNetworks.org. Among them are names that are no doubt familiar to students of the left, including Corinne Brown, Emanuel Cleaver, Bonnie Watson Coleman, John Conyers, Elijah Cummings, Keith Ellison, Sheila Jackson Lee, John Lewis, Charles Rangel, Bobby Rush, and Maxine Waters.

Brennan turned 21 in 1976, and, just finishing up his master’s degree in government from the University of Texas at Austin, he decided to take out his newfound antipathy towards things American and voted in the presidential election … for the Communist Party’s Gus Hall. Four years later his vote came back to haunt him, or so he thought. The CIA sounded like fun, and he applied for a position. During the process he had to take a lie detector test, which, predictably, asked him this question: “Have you ever worked with or for a group that was dedicated to overthrowing the US?” He told the Black Caucus what happened next:

I froze. This was back in 1980, and I thought back to a previous election [1976] where I voted, and I voted for the Communist Party Candidate [Gus Hall]….

I said I was neither Democratic or Republican, but it was my way, as I was going to college, of signaling my unhappiness with the “system,” and the need for “change.”

I said I’m not a member of the Communist Party, so the polygrapher look at me and said, “OK,” and when I was finished with the polygraph, I left and said [to myself], “Well, I’m s—–d.”

Brennan wasn’t “s—–d” after all. He was admitted to the CIA, which proved his point as he told the Black Caucus:

So if, back in 1980, John Brennan was allowed to say, “I voted for the Communist Party with Gus Hall – and still go through, rest assured that your rights and expressions and your freedom of speech as Americans is something that’s not going to be disqualifying of you as you pursue a career in government.

With any luck at all, considering the backgrounds of some of the present members of the Black Caucus, they might be able to wreak as much damage to the republic as Brennan has.

Forget for the moment that he was caught in a lie when he denied Senator Dianne Feinstein’s charges that his agency had hacked into some of her staffers’ computers. Forget also that he tried to massage the message that Susan Rice gave as an excuse for the Benghazi attack. Let’s look at the most damaging thing Brennan has done, thanks to his “unhappiness” with the system and its need for a “change”: the good old American “kill list,” which gives the president permission to kill any American citizen who might wind up surviving the culling, the sorting, the sifting, the winnowing that various agency heads, including Brennan, perform before issuing the kill order to the president. That this is totally outside anything the Constitution allows is beside the point. After all, according to the White Paper released by the Justice Department, there are times when waiting for due process to take place – judges, probable cause, and all that – just won’t work. The time to take out an American on the kill list is now!

When NBC News got a copy of that white paper in 2013, it reviewed the legalese all dressed up to look reasonable. What it did was enrage the ACLU. Hina Shamsi, director of the ACLU’s National Security Project, was appalled:

[The paper is] a profoundly disturbing document…. It’s hard to believe that it was produced in a democracy built on a system of checks and balances. It summarizes in cold [quasi-] legal terms a stunning overreach of executive authority: the claimed power to declare Americans a threat and [to] kill them far from a recognized battlefield and without any judicial involvement.

Glenn Greenwald, the Guardian newspaper investigative journalist behind the release of Edward Snowden’s damning documents, added that the kill list has established “simultaneously a surveillance state and a secretive, unaccountable judicial body that analyzes who you are and then decrees what should be done with you … how you should be disposed of, beyond the reach of any minimal accountability or transparency.”

That white paper held up the nomination of John Brennan to become CIA Director … for two months. Then the Senate Intelligence Committee approved his nomination 12 to 3.

Kentucky Senator Rand Paul took action, and took the floor for 13 hours, dismantling any pretense the white paper had of protecting Americans’ rights to trial by jury, due process, and all the rest. Said Paul:

No one politician should be allowed to judge the guilt, to charge an individual, to judge the guilt of an individual and to execute an individual.

It goes against everything we fundamentally believe in our country.

After receiving soothing words from the White House that it really didn’t mean what the white paper said, the full Senate voted to approve Brennan’s nomination, 63-34.

Now age 61, Brennan is looking for someone to replace him. The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation is the perfect place to find a recruit who also quacks like a duck.
