A big week for Trump
Senate testimony scheduled for this week could either create more problems for the Trump administration amid accusations that the president attempted to kill an FBI investigation or provide even more evidence of the administration’s critics lack of evidence on the matter. Meanwhile, House lawmakers are scheduled to help the president continue his impressive deregulatory efforts via a vote to roll back certain provisions of the Dodd-Frank Act.
Reports out Sunday doused rumors that President Trump is likely to use executive privilege to block former FBI director James Comey’s testimony this week.
“I want to know what kind of pressure – appropriate, inappropriate – how many conversations he had with the president about this topic?” Democratic Sen. Mark Warner said on CBS’s “Face the Nation” Sunday.
Republican Sen. Susan Collins agreed that she’s eager to hear Comey’s testimony.
“The tone, the exact words that were spoken and the context are so important and that’s what we lack right now and we can only get that by talking to those directly involved,” she said.
In other news related to accusations against the president, Russian leader Vladimir Putin told NBC’s “Sunday Night with Megyn Kelly” that he was shocked to hear Democrats claim the president was somehow working with Russia.
“I haven’t seen, even once, any direct proof of Russian interference in the presidential election in the United States,” he said.
Putin added that there were “no meetings” between his officials and members of the Trump team.
“When I saw this my jaw dropped,” he said.
As for his relationship with Michael Flynn, the Russian leader said he only met him briefly at an event in 2015.
“I made my speech. Then we talked about some other stuff. And I got up and left,” Putin said. “That’s it. I didn’t even really talk to him. That’s the extent of my acquaintance with Mr. Flynn.”
Meanwhile, Trump responded to a weekend terror attack in London Sunday. The president used the attack to reiterate the importance of his controversial travel ban.
“We renew our resolve, stronger than ever before, to protect the United States and its allies from a vile enemy that has waged war on innocent life. And it has gone on too long,” Trump said at the Ford’s Theatre annual gala.
“This bloodshed must end. This bloodshed will end. As president, I will do what is necessary is to prevent this threat from spreading to our shores,” he added.
In response to the president’s remarks, CNN host Reza Aslan called Trump a piece of shit.
“This piece of shit is not just an embarrassment to America and a stain on the presidency. He’s an embarrassment to humankind,” the host said.
